I am sure there are times when revisiting the scan makes some practical sense, but most of the time it's like:

1. Here's my gorgeous Cobb card + image
2. "Here's my gorgeous Cobb card + image" Hey nice Cobb card
3. "Here's my gorgeous Cobb card + image" Wow! Great Cobb card
4. ""Here's my gorgeous Cobb card + image" That Cobb is unbelievable.

There you have 4 scans of the same card and basically no useful added information other than the appropriate kudos for a gorgeous Cobb card.

Default Personally

Personally, I like using the quoting feature. It makes it easier to follow a conversation, for me, anyway. As for quoting scans, I can understand that being an annoyance. regards

I agree that there is far too much quoting on the board. It's a useful tool for an occasional reference, but it is used on almost every post and is often unnecessary.

Almost every one? Well, maybe for some of us .

How did I know with absolute certainty that what I said was going to end up five minutes later as part of quote. You guys are predictable!

And I don't even know how to grab a quote.

Jon,

You mentioned "4 pages of previous posts". Are you aware that you can "fix" that?

Click "User CP" in the tool bar.

Click "Edit Options."

Scroll down to "Thread Display Options"

You can then adjust the "Number of Posts to Show Per Page."

It adjusts up to 80. Mosts threads never get longer than that. It may take a few seconds longer to load a page, but it greatly reduces threads with multiple pages.

Barry,

On the right side, bottom of every post is a "Quote" button.

Click on that and the entire post is in your reply.

You can also edit out certain parts and/or images as long as you leave in the brackets and the words Quote.

E.g., Here I have edited down my quote of Jim's post to only highlight the portion I want to share again in my post. My feeling is that many people just click "quote" and then make no effort to edit the original post.

Read the thread, then we don't need the 'quotes', they gobble up space, twice as much through which to scroll and at which to scowl. (Sorry, that last part was for Barry, our resident logophile. [And Leon, why isn't logophile in this site's dictionary?]).
We have a dictionary? (does this answer your question?)

Again, I think it's going to be a matter or personal preference if you like the quoting or not. I certainly understand about the scans being quoted, but for me who uses a standard desktop about 95% of the time, and don't even own an Iphone or Blackberry etc.....it works just fine.

I'm in the same school of thought as Frank W is, regarding this feature.

The "QUOTE" feature is overused by many. And, as Frank already said......
"Most of the time someone is 'quoting' to take exception to something that was said...."

When making a point, why not simply refer to the Post # and spare us the "QUOTE".

Or, why not simply "cut and paste" the portion of a Post that one feels the need to refer to ?
Rather, than cluttering up the thread with the entire quoted Post. Of which, 90% is irrelevant.

Anyhow, that's my 2 Drachmas....for whatever they are worth.

Ted made a good point. Sometimes a very long post is quoted in its entirety, when only a sentence or two is relevant to what the next poster wants to say. Maybe shortening some of them would make for a good compromise. If I take the time to read somebody's long post, why should I be asked to read it again?

Default you don't need to read it if you don't want to

Barry- You don't need to read the highlighted quotes if you don't want to. I only read them part of the time. It is better to take out the part that is actually pertinent to the response and only quote it....but that takes some time and sometimes I am lazy.

See, now I have to go back up and figure out which Cobb is superawesome since you didn't quote the photo.
