Net54Baseball Posting Pet Peeve - "Quoting" Scans
Not sure if this is the right place for my gripe, but when people decide to quote other people in their threads, can you please make sure not to also include their scanned image, if there was one? It really makes the threads more cumbersome to read, especially on my mobile device, which is where I access Net54Baseball half the time.
Thanks.... |
Haven't noticed that here, but that's a reasonable request. I've seen it happen on other boards know what you're talking about.
|
I actually have the opposite view. I prefer when someone quotes the scan so I don't have to go back through (sometimes) 4 pages of previous posts to figure out what card or item the quote referred to. When the 100th post in a string says "Killer card, Matt" and the scan isn't quoted, I then have to figure out who Matt is and what card was "killer."
|
Quote:
1. Here's my gorgeous Cobb card + image 2. "Here's my gorgeous Cobb card + image" Hey nice Cobb card 3. "Here's my gorgeous Cobb card + image" Wow! Great Cobb card 4. ""Here's my gorgeous Cobb card + image" That Cobb is unbelievable. There you have 4 scans of the same card and basically no useful added information other than the appropriate kudos for a gorgeous Cobb card. |

Personally
Personally, I like using the quoting feature. It makes it easier to follow a conversation, for me, anyway. As for quoting scans, I can understand that being an annoyance. regards
|
I agree that there is far too much quoting on the board. It's a useful tool for an occasional reference, but it is used on almost every post and is often unnecessary.

How did I know with absolute certainty that what I said was going to end up five minutes later as part of quote. You guys are predictable!
And I don't even know how to grab a quote. |

Jon,
You mentioned "4 pages of previous posts". Are you aware that you can "fix" that? Click "User CP" in the tool bar. Click "Edit Options." Scroll down to "Thread Display Options" You can then adjust the "Number of Posts to Show Per Page." It adjusts up to 80. Mosts threads never get longer than that. It may take a few seconds longer to load a page, but it greatly reduces threads with multiple pages. |
Barry,
On the right side, bottom of every post is a "Quote" button. Click on that and the entire post is in your reply. You can also edit out certain parts and/or images as long as you leave in the brackets and the words Quote. |

Good point Jon.
:) |
Thanks Jim, I'll give it a try.
|
Jim - thanks. I actually have modified my settings. I was more or less referring to the pick-up threads. Those can usually go well beyond 4 pages even with my post count set at 50 per page.

Again, I think it's going to be a matter or personal preference if you like the quoting or not. I certainly understand about the scans being quoted, but for me who uses a standard desktop about 95% of the time, and don't even own an Iphone or Blackberry etc.....it works just fine. |
I'm in the same school of thought as Frank W is, regarding this feature.
The "QUOTE" feature is overused by many. And, as Frank already said...... "Most of the time someone is 'quoting' to take exception to something that was said...." When making a point, why not simply refer to the Post # and spare us the "QUOTE". Or, why not simply "cut and paste" the portion of a Post that one feels the need to refer to ? Rather, than cluttering up the thread with the entire quoted Post. Of which, 90% is irrelevant. Anyhow, that's my 2 Drachmas....for whatever they are worth. T-Rex TED |

Ted made a good point. Sometimes a very long post is quoted in its entirety, when only a sentence or two is relevant to what the next poster wants to say. Maybe shortening some of them would make for a good compromise. If I take the time to read somebody's long post, why should I be asked to read it again?

you don't need to read it if you don't want to
Barry- You don't need to read the highlighted quotes if you don't want to. I only read them part of the time. It is better to take out the part that is actually pertinent to the response and only quote it....but that takes some time and sometimes I am lazy. :)
|
Jeff- what's to lose? Sometimes people post very long threads, often consisting of several paragraphs. I may read it and then scroll down and see someone has grabbed the entire long thread and used it as a quote. Am I expected to read it again? I will just ignore it. But if only a few relevant sentences were grabbed from that long post, I am more likely to read them. That's all.
|
I am squarely in the T206 Collector-Frank W-TedZan camp on this one. No need to "quote" the scans, especially when there's a lot of them. When I'm on the fly scrolling a thread on my iPhone can take forever if there is a redundancy of scans. When I'm at my desktop it's just all the more clutter to have to wade through. Not the biggest problem facing mankind I suppose, just sayin'.
Great Cobb, Jeff. Way beyond superawesome. |
Leon- to use your example, if you are too lazy to extract a few relevant sentences from a very long post, then why quote at all? Why not just say what you want to without repeating someone else's thread?

It's actually a useful tool when used judiciously, but not when it is in nearly every post. Remember what happened to Elaine when she overused the exclamation point? Same thing!!!

dinosaur grave
I don't understand this stuff so i realize that i must be under the dinosaur grave
referred to earlier. But i do like Jeff's Cobb very much. My proxy vote goes to Barry Sloate who is astute enough to be above me in the dinosaur grave. best, barry |
I gotta be honest here. For this option to really bother some one enough where it needs to be discussed in great length is kinda silly, don't ya' think?
Here I am gettin' home after a long 10 hour work day. I sit down to relax, jump on N54 to unwind a bit only to find out the quote option bothers someone. GEESH!!! ps- Jeff, Nice Cobby.... No quote option used. :) |

To Tony's point about this being trivial. It is but hey....such is collecting sometimes. I wish this was my biggest issue (quoting on the board)...but unfortunately it doesn't quite make my top 1000. regards |

Tony- I know the idea of fighting over the use of the quote function seems trivial, but this is about more than that. It's really about class warfare...the dinosaurs against the younger and more computer literate crowd. Class struggles are always worth debating. (okay, I used my sarcasm button this time).
|
I understand and completely agree with the original intent of this thread that scans and uploaded images shouldn't be included in quotes as it is redundant.
However I like being able to quote text and think it is useful in letting everyone know who my post is directed at if it is one persons thoughts in particular I am addressing. Since the software does a great job of differentiating a quote from new text I don't see why those that don't like them can't simply skip over them. |
Barry. Maybe that's why it struck me as silly. I'm an in betweener at 43.
Definitely not young, but not quite a dinosaur yet either. ;) |
I'm a bona fide dinosaur.:(

Barry
I think all references to Seinfeld and Honeymooners episodes should be in quotes :D
