Default Cobb's Rookie

His true Rookie is from either the Dietsche or Wolverine Post Card set.

Default open ended question

When figuring out rookie "cards" we must first define what a card is. That, in itself, is no easy task.

Fred, this is really a tough call because you'd have to decide first whether a postcard is a 'card' in your estimation. And then you would have to decide whether Cobb's presence in a team photo could be his first card.

I would say that his first appearance at all in a card of any variety would be the 1906 Sporting Life Team card; the first possible appearance by himself could be the W600 but it is unclear what year from the run that card came from.

On a card in which Cobb is depicted alone, be it a card or a postcard, I'd have to choose from one of the following:

1907 AC Dietsche PC 765-1-1 Batting

1907 AC Dietsche PC 765-1-1 Fielding

1907-09 HM Taylor Postcard PC 773-2

1907 Wolverine News PC 773-3 Portrait

1907 Wolverine News PC 773-3 Batting

Or the Novelty Cutlery PC of which I don't have a scan to show you.

For a long time collectors have considered the Dietsche postcard to be Cobb's rookie card, but with several postcards originating from 1907 it is almost impossible to designate one definitively. I think it will always remain open-ended.

As far as actual cards E102 is thought to have been issued in 1908, and thus his very first small format card. But I bet even that has been challenged. Cobb is one of the toughest players to have a consensus on what his rookie card is.
