Cobb's Rookie
His true Rookie is from either the Dietsche or Wolverine Post Card set.

open ended question
When figuring out rookie "cards" we must first define what a card is. That, in itself, is no easy task. :o

Fred, this is really a tough call because you'd have to decide first whether a postcard is a 'card' in your estimation. And then you would have to decide whether Cobb's presence in a team photo could be his first card.
I would say that his first appearance at all in a card of any variety would be the 1906 Sporting Life Team card; the first possible appearance by himself could be the W600 but it is unclear what year from the run that card came from. On a card in which Cobb is depicted alone, be it a card or a postcard, I'd have to choose from one of the following: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/2909247865/" title="1907 AC Dietsche PC 765-1-1 Batting by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3159/2909247865_a07d3caa4a_o.jpg" width="500" height="858" alt="1907 AC Dietsche PC 765-1-1 Batting" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/2909248245/" title="1907 AC Dietsche PC 765-1-1 Fielding by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3118/2909248245_6eedc07b2f_o.jpg" width="500" height="862" alt="1907 AC Dietsche PC 765-1-1 Fielding" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/2910087380/" title="1907-09 HM Taylor Postcard PC 773-2 by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3020/2910087380_54a6d792f0_o.jpg" width="835" height="472" alt="1907-09 HM Taylor Postcard PC 773-2" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/4017117934/" title="1907 Wolverine News PC 773-3 Portrait by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2674/4017117934_180ac1b7d0_o.jpg" width="468" height="856" alt="1907 Wolverine News PC 773-3 Portrait" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/2909248677/" title="1907 Wolverine News PC 773-3 Batting by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3173/2909248677_ef340e3204_o.jpg" width="500" height="926" alt="1907 Wolverine News PC 773-3 Batting" /></a> Or the Novelty Cutlery PC of which I don't have a scan to show you. |
For a long time collectors have considered the Dietsche postcard to be Cobb's rookie card, but with several postcards originating from 1907 it is almost impossible to designate one definitively. I think it will always remain open-ended.
As far as actual cards E102 is thought to have been issued in 1908, and thus his very first small format card. But I bet even that has been challenged. Cobb is one of the toughest players to have a consensus on what his rookie card is. |
thanks guys

From my notes, the first time that Cobb was offered as a subject in the W600 series was October 19, 1907.
So, in my opinion, his W600 along with the postcards listed above could certainly be considered Cobb's rookie card as they were all first issued in 1907. I am not sure when the Novelty Cutlery postcard was first issued. |

Wow, Jeff. Nice Cobb cards. I collect Exhibits, but now am going to have to consider going after some of the older PC's.

i don't collect PCs or box cutouts, and i have an e101 cobb...so yea i would consider the e101 his true rookie card (along with the lesser popular e92/e102/e95/e90-1).
edit: yea forgot about the w600, that would be a cool 1st card of cobb. |
Quan, I agree, once you start going to cards and not PCs, all of those you mentioned are pretty difficult to determine which was certainly first.

Was Cobb on the 1905 Sporting Life Team Composites ? Can someone show a scan of it ? Thanks

Here is a link to the OldCardboard.com webpage which identifies Cobb's "Top 5 Rookie Cards":
http://www.oldcardboard.com/ref/rook...tail.asp?id=64 Jeff's Detroit Team Postcard pre-dates all five true Rookie Cards (Individual Appearances) and here is the 1905 W601 Detroit Premium which is the earliest image of Cobb on a ML collectible: |
I'm not 100% certain but I recall seeing some PCs with cancellation dates at or around the date Kevin provided for the W600.
|
I know the RC rules are different past a certain point, but what is Cobb's first ever pack released Major League baseball card?
|
If a rookie can be a multi player card, then why isnt the 1967 Topps Mets Team card Nolan Ryans rookie card? He is pictured on it.
|
For me, a distinction as to whether or not a team card "counts" as a card of a particular player, is if the player is actually identified by name on the card (either front or back). That's just me.
|
I vote for the W600 i.e. a card, nationally distributed and a single picture.
I still can not fully accept a postcard being classified as a card. Same goes for a team card being labeled for an individual player. This doesn't subtract from the beauty of any of them, just my thoughts for the people that must have cards labeled as rookies or not. It is a big deal for many collectors. Now, if only Sporting Life had the foresight to label the team card as "Tiger Future Stars" - then you would have a rookie card. Does anybody have any of the 1901-17 Police Gazette Supplements #19 Ty Cobb to show? Also, all of us don't know anything as I believe Beckett has the T206 listed as the Cobb rookie in their definitive Rookie Book. |
