Wow never noticed before. I just googled it and many different web sites have different years on his date of birth. The first 6 sites on google came up 3 for 1887 and 3 for 1888.

Very interesting

That is interesting. Wonder where the 1887 comes from?
His gravestone says 1888.

According to his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card from 1917-1918 it was 1887. I have found that birth years were often listed differently for people born in the late 1800s. When I was working on my family history I would find different birth years on different forms, etc.

If this is his draft card for the first WWI draft, it was held June 5, 1917 and was for all men between the ages of 21 and 31. Maybe he made himself one year older for this entry hoping that he would be able to age out if the army went back to the same age pool at least 13 months later?

Maybe, but as Robert says, there used to just be uncertainty about these things. My grandfather was never quite sure which year he was born. He put "1900" on forms, but that was just a guess.
