316 (November 11, 2020 – 316)
On November 10th and 11th of 1994 The Don Drysdale Hall of Fame gold tournament was held at the Desert Falls and Rancho La Quinta golf courses. The event was to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Coachella Valley. Below is Brooks’ metal golf tag from the benefit event. Back in 1985, I responded to an ad in Sports Collectors Digest from a woman who was a talented artist who recently started painting baseballs and I commisioned her to paint balls of Cal, Eddie & Brooks...I thought the work she did was so good I then asked if she ever painted portraits on a bat.. She replied she hadn't but the thought had crossed her mind and if I sent her up a bat, she'd give it a try at no cost... Here is the result (signed years later by CRJ who even remarked how much he liked it): ![]() Last edited by roarfrom34; 11-11-2020 at 06:40 AM. |

That bat is outstanding. Please post some pics of the baseballs. I would love to see them. Do you remember anything about the artist? I think I see some initials of the artist under the portrait. It would be cool if she was indeed from Maine. I have a couple of paintings in my collection. The first one I received for Christmas from my wife in 1983. The artist was in the mall doing portraits for families. She did the Brooks Robinson from one of his postcards. 1983 Brooks Robinson painting by Grace Eng DSCN2167.jpg The second painting of Jim Palmer was done by an artist named H.E. Halvorsen. I haven't been able to find any info about the artist. I picked it up at a card show in the mid 1980's. Interesting hat design? I don't remember the Orioles wearing that version. Day 317 (November 12, 2020 – 317)
A small 1968 Plans of action foldout booklet, with Brooks on the cover, which discusses ticket plans for the season. Day 317 a Plans of Action 1968 Ticket Plans.jpg Here’s an interesting photo of Brooks, in an away game at Fenway Park, helping the grounds crew (do you think Brooks wants to play baseball or what?). I don’t have all the information, but I think it’s a game from June 2, 1968 where the Orioles beat the Red Sox 4-3. Day 317 b Photo 1968 Ground Crew June 2 1.jpg |

Nice artwork....I have the painted baseballs in a storage bin right now, but I'll get them out..When I first met the artist she was Sue Bogyo, but she now goes by Suzanne Wolf and her website is www.suzannewolf.com; I originally thought she was from Maine but I now beleive she is from the mid-west.. I have a few pieces of Cal Jr. artwork & here is an original painting by Eric Cash that was used for an Upper Deck card of him back in 2007...The artist conveniently didn't finish the lower right hand corner of the painting (since it wouldn't be seen on the card) and it was the perfect spot for me to have Cal sign/inscribe it: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I've been a minor league card collector from the beginning, when TCMA came out with sets in the 1970's.
Certainly, the holy grails of Orioles minor league sets are the 1980 Charlotte O's blue SGA set and the O's orange Police set. Both of those sets contain coveted Cal Ripken Jr cards. I'm lucky to have the complete blue set, but only 9 cards from the orange set and no Ripken. At the prices the orange Ripken command, I'll probably never finish the set, but do look for nice examples of the others. I do have the John Shelby, Drungo Hazewood and Willie Royster cards, which are three of the guys to play for the Orioles. Two of my other favorite sets also feature the Charlotte O's. While not extremely expensive, both sets are somewhat hard to find. Both sets contain a sampling of future Orioles players. The 1981 set issued by the team looks very similar to the 1980 orange Police set. I see attempts to pass these off as the 1980 cards. The main difference is that the backs are much different and don't have tips from the Police Dept like the 1980 set. 1981 Charlotte O's team issued set 1981 Team Charlotte O's #1.jpg 1981 Team Charlotte O's #2.jpg 1981 Team Charlotte O's #3.jpg s-l400.jpg The 1982 set has a nice design. It's labeled as "Heroes Aren't Hard to Find". Again the set can be had at a reasonable price if you can find one. 1982 Charlotte O's Heroes set 1982 Heroes Charlotte O's #1.jpg 1982 Heroes Charlotte O's #2.jpg 1982 Heroes Charlotte O's #3.jpg 1982 Heroes Charlotte O's #4.jpg |

Day 318 (November 13, 2020 – 318)
Coming off the 1966 season with a World Series victory you’d figure the Orioles would be in the running for the upcoming 1967 season. We had Frank Robinson coming off his Triple Crown year, surrounded by a group of young stars, and the pitching was on a high. Well, as you already know it wasn’t meant to be and the Orioles finished in 6th place 15 ½ games back of first place. There were several issues this year, but we’ll not go over them. I’ll start today with a 1967 Orioles Season Pass. Day 318 a 1967 Season Pass.jpg At least during 1967 we could relive some great memories from the Series in the Topps set like the following card: 1967 Topps World Series Game 4 “Orioles Win 4th Straight” #154 Day 318 1967-topps-154-world-series-game-4.jpg As a plus Brooks had his floating head on a 1967 checklist card. As Darren (JollyElm) noted early, in post #20, there is a variation of the checklist. I’ll go with the names given by Darren and put them in his own words. “The first one, which I decided to call Mr. Chin, features his chin shadow coming in contact with the top of the black bounding box. This version includes a large amount of dark shadowing beneath his chin and up the side of his face. The second version, Mr. Cheeky portrays him with more of a svelte appearance as he people at Topps cropped out a good amount of his face, making him appear much thinner. It’s most obvious in the section of his cheek below his left ear.” I’ll just picture one variation of the checklist and if you’d like to view the other check out post #20. 1967 Topps Checklist #531 Day 318 1967 Topps Checklist #531.jpg Day 318 1967 Topps Checklist #531 back.jpg |
