Very nice photo there. Looks like it might be a spring training game in Arizona or southern California. DiMaggio was an enigmatic figure that few people - even those close to him - understood well. Interesting that his brother Dom was so very different in personality, yet they were both fine athletes in their time.

Interesting to note, while playing in a monstrous sized park (400 to the line and 475 to the alley in his prime--forget CF) DiMaggio had more HR than strikeouts until the final 2 months of his career in '51. In addition, he not only holds the ML record for hitting in 56 straight games (73 of 74) he also holds the PROFESSIONAL record of 61 straight in the PCL. He was...pretty good.

I want to thank everyone for all of the pictures and stories!
Growing up as a baseball and baseball card fanatic in the 70s and early 80s, I always liked Joe D. He was still doing commercials all of the time. I also read many books about all of the Yankees of his time. And then I find myself in 7th grade Science class with a girl named DiMaggio. I had to ask, and she ended up being a close relative and a couple of weeks later brought me an autographed ball. |
