I would agree that Joe D has slipped a bit in popularity from when I first learned about baseball in the 1980’s. Based on what I heard of him as a kid, I would have probably told you he was one of the top 5 players ever, or something like that. I wonder how much of that was due to his insistence on being introduced as the “greatest living ball player” anytime he did anything public?

When DiMaggio was voted the greatest living player, he had only been retired for about 18 years. Those involved in that vote knew very well who he was. Of course, that title, is completely subjective, as there were many other great players. Add onto that, that players for the Negro Leagues weren't even considered. |
