Lots of Polar Bear T206s (and T205s) have tobacco stains like that. Even so, I would expect their grade to suffer more than this. Even without the stains, that looks like a generous 4.

I actually didn't consider that it was Polar Bear, and therefore in a loose tobacco pouch. Nevertheless, a grade is a grade, right? The standard shouldn't sway based on distribution method, card stock, etc.

If that was my card and all it got from PSA was a 4, I would crack it out and send it to Lucky Larry for grading.

Card is overgraded, they do exist just as under graded cards do. thats what happens when humans authenticate and/or grade millions and millions of items, mistakes get made.

That card could have any one of 3 qualifiers - ST, MC, OC |

It's an old flip. It wouldn't get that grade today.

It reminds me of one particular dealer in the late '90's/early 2000's who made a practice of opening the slabs, taking out the legitimately graded card, and replacing it with one of an inferior nature. That having been said, a "4" for that example is really a stretch and should have been so regardless of the time period in which it was graded.

SGC would probably give it a grade of 60...

So PSA grades more harshly today than say, 10 years ago? As such, do PSA graded cards in newer slabs command a premium as the grade is considered more accurate?

Lately, PSA seems to be all over the place with Polar Bear backed T205s and T206s. There has been a spate of PSA-graded Polar Bear T205s on ebay lately, many with some really bad tobacco staining (at least IMHO), and in many cases, the grades seem to not take the staining into account.

If it had stronger corners, I think you would see the stains hurt the grade. At 4, I think the stains are built into the grade. Same for centering. I have a Clemente with NM corners, but 5 centering in a 5 holder. I see cards with the same centering, but worse corners get the same grade. PSA has a set of minimum standards for grades. If they only hit one, that is the grade despite superior attributes in other areas. Cards with lesser attributes in those areas can still get the same grade as long as they meet the minimums.
