Thanks man, was hoping there would be a little more activity on these forums for older (even if not vintage/pre-war) cards.

+1 on this

Do such cards exist? Seems like that'll be quite a challenge. What's the budget to complete the set? $5k? 10k? I have no idea what this would cost to get the cards on the secondary market, or produce them yourself by buying raw and submitting. If you do the latter, you could probably complete an '83 set in 9/Mint, too

I thought about doing this for '87 Topps, the year I really got into it. What do you think that would cost, if you don't mind my asking?

To more traction on the post-80 board!

It's 792 cards. The 3 big hitters are the Sandberg, Gwynn, and Boggs rookie cards (About $1000-$1200). Lots of commons sell for under $10 but there are so many cards. I'm thinking in the long run it's gonna cost me about $10,000. There are some SUPER low POP commons so might need to spend money grading it. I have a lot of time (really and endless supply) to complete the set so will take them as they come.

So far I grabbed 19 commons and a Rickey Henderson so I didnt have ONLY commons.

I'm certainly not trying to discourage you and I believe collectors are free to collect however they want, but if it were me and I had $10K to drop on a 1983 Topps set, I think I would buy a mint raw set and put the other $9900 in a mutual fund.

In 30 years from now, I guarantee you the mutual fund will be worth several times what a PSA 10 1983 Topps set is worth. Again, I’m no one to tell other people how or what to collect, but I think in 30 years from now you would be more happy with $100K (or more) sitting in a mutual fund with a nice raw ’83 set than you would be with just a PSA 10 ’83 set.

Good luck!

Thanks but I dont see myself getting 792 cards including the 3 big guys for $100.

If you think that 9900 in a "mutual fund" will guarantee that I will have $100k in 30 years you don't know the stock market too well.

This is a personal project because I think it will be awesome to have and to pass down to my kids (when I have them). When I do have them I will put together the full topps series 1,2,update sets in psa 10 for them as well and it will be something cool to have. If $10,000 made a huge life difference to me then I totally would not be spending it on baseball cards. Sorry if that sounded snotty it's just the truth.

To success! Big bucks don't come easy, so more power to you if you've earned yourself the luxury of indulging in an awesome project like this. If I may be so bold as to speak for everybody, you'll have nothing but well wishes from all of us. That and envy, anyway

You plan to give updates about your project anywhere? Might make for a cool Facebook page, blog series, or Net54 thread. I'd certainly be interested to see how you would go about this in case I ever decide to put 100% of my fun budget towards an '87 TOpps set. Really curious to learn of your sources and learn from your experiences if you don't mind sharing.

And +1 for sticking around Net54

You're right - it will only cost you $48.99 + $9.59 shipping.

The remaining $9,941.42 invested at 8% will be $100,037.15 in 30 years.

Don't worry about giving your 1983 topps set to your kids. They'll call it a "baby's toy" and take off on their hoverboards.

There is some activity as a lot of our collectors cross over to the newer years. But this board is known for Pre-War so that is what gets the most activity. That being said we are a friendly group so I hope you hang out and collect with us. Eventually you might even see a pre-war card/set you would like to collect.

Yea I know that I setup at a show in Philly next to someone that is a big pre-war guy and was telling me about this forum. Figured Id give it a shot. I have been on some others (outside of blowout) and they tend to be filled with mostly kids and its just not worth the effort. Figured this was a good step.
