This SGC 30 (which I currently have up on eBay) has a small area of paper loss on the back in addition to areas of stain.

As far as I can remember paper loss, also referred to as a surface tear, has always been able to achieve a grade from SGC of Good 30 (2) as long as the rest of the card's characteristics were good. And in some cases a grade as high as VG/EX 50 4 could be achieved if it was a small and very minor surface tear. If the paper loss is present along with other detractors then the grade gets lowered accordingly.

It is all detailed if you read through their Grading Scale

Still, I have to ask, do people treat an SGC 30, with minor paper loss, as a true 30--or do they discount because of it?

Everyone is different when it comes to appeal of a card. An SGC30 card with a small amount of paperloss is acceptable to most collectors. The fact it has been graded SGC30 means it has already been discounted. Someone may not buy it because they consider paperloss a major defect. For others, paperloss is no big deal on a SGC30 card.

SGC are always accurate and fair in my opinion. Personally, I collect ungraded cards and grade them to oldschool, Charelton standards.

PSA seems to have made it's own rules when it comes to grading. For example, a card that is miscut or off-center can receive a NM-MT grade as long as "MC" of "OC" is written on the slab. Denoting MC or OC on the slab doesn't make the card better. Makes the slab more appealing but not the card.

why shouldn't a mint card with a factory miscut be graded MINTmc? or mk for some kind of writing? easier for me than trying to figure out why that EX-looking card is graded an sgc 20...erased writing or pinhole i'm not seeing maybe? of course half the time PSA couldn't even see the marking...

Default This one has been given to me as an example that I'm not offering enough

http://tinyurl.com/87nxa5p

Someone has a card I want, and I've made an offer. They show this one, listed as a BIN for quite some time, as a card with paper loss worth a lot more than I am offering. I keep pointing out no one is buying, but that point hasn't sunk in yet.
