Words can't describe how excited I am to be able to bring to market what I believe is arguably the most significant post war baseball card in existence! See the website for more details. The Stahl Meyer cards were distributed in packages of hot dogs! The offered example (along with a scant few others) was saved from the greasy demise by a printing company employee.

Asking price is $2.657 million

To price the card I started with the sale of a highest graded PSA 8, 1954 example that sold for $220K and a 1953 PSA 7 that sold for $68,125. I then prepared a spread sheet looking at sales of Mickey Mantles Topps and Bowman cards (1951-1969) that sell a bit more regularly in grades of PSA 7 and PSA 9. The price multiple from PSA 7's-9's ranged from a low of 9X (1965) to a high of 162X (1969 white letter). All but 1 of the Topps and Bowman cards have multiple examples in PSA 9 grade and all but 4 of them have PSA 10's graded higher. With the populations considered, I think it is quite reasonable to suggest that the Stahl Meyer being a POP 1 highest graded should trade at the highest (or higher) multiple as any of the Topps or Bowmans. I instead have priced the card at a very conservative 39X multiple (the average multiple of all the Topps and Bowmans) of the actual Stahl Meyer PSA 7 sale. $2.657 million.

The Stahl Meyers are highly desireable high demand cards that don't exist in the kind of quantities to satisfy the number of Collectors that want one. In fact there are a total of just 95 SGC and PSA graded examples! When you look at 64 of them that are graded 1's or A's, you start to grasp how special this example is!

I never realized that the image on this card, which is the same one used on the 1954 Dan-Dee, was from a photo taken from his rookie season in 1951 by Bob Olen, the Yankees photographer.

The black and white photos then were hand colored to create the cards.

So you might say it's his first true rookie photo on a baseball card.

While the Briggs in an absolute sense is scarcer, The condition this Stahl Meyer is in blows away the Briggs.

That 8 is a newer slab than the 9 is in. I think that was just someone pointing out the previous record sale for the issue, not any claim it was the same card.

Ah did not realize the comparison was the back of the 54 SM 8 and the back of the 53 SM 9. Appreciate the explanation.

The 54 and 55 SMs came with and without tabs from those I have seen.

This 1954 PSA 9 Mays sold for $93K less than a year ago.

It has aways been my impression, from speaking with Brian P., that the 1954 populations are significantly lower than the 1953 issue. PSA pop supports this with #69 1953 Mantles having been graded versus #23 1954 . I'm not sure how this may play in to the comparison with the PSA 8 1954 sale...likely little.
I don't know the value but this is surely an outstanding and unique gem of a card!!

Cards like this sometimes fall through the cracks in auctions. The Mays has since been privately placed for significantly more than the $93K auction sale and is not for sale.

That said if you think about what a 52 Mays in a PSA 9 (or 10) might sell for Vs. a 52 Mantle in a PSA 9 (or 10) today, I think you'll quickly realize that comparing prices of Mantle and Mays is comparing apples and oranges.
