Can we get an agreement on the Top 10 T206 cards in terms of value in PSA 1 status? So, if you wanted to put together the 10 most valuable T206 cards in PSA 1 condition, what would they be? |

Being that my favorite card is my SCG 20 Mathewson Portrait, I'm going to throw in a vote for it. It might not be the most valuable but it's in my top Ten. |

I'd say #7 Ty Cobb-green portrait, #8 Ty Cobb-bat on, #9 Ty Cobb-bat off, #10 Walter Johnson-portrait. |

...do you have to go before it starts getting really hairy. Seems like we've had some consensus on the first 10, thanks to the 4 Cobbs. But when do the Lajoie vs. Young vs. Matty vs. Johnson, etc. debates start? |

Here are the Top 25 T206's graded PSA 1 (common backs only), ranked according to the most recent sales price recorded in VCP. These are not averages taken over multiple sales, but simply the last price that was paid for each card in PSA 1: |

The most interesting part of that list is not at the top, but at the bottom. A PSA8 Stanage only went for $108.10? Could that be an error? |

The last Oscar Stanage was a PSA 8 OC that sold for $108.10 at Mile High Card Co. in Oct 2008. Apparently VCP doesn't distinguish on qualifiers -- although they do mention that the card was an 8 OC in the "Extra" column next to the listed price. Previously the Stanage card in PSA 8 sold for $2,901 in a Goodwin auction in Oct 2006. |

Nice listing, Ebrehm. Thanks for posting that. I'm surprised that the Elberfield Washington portrait is so low. And one of the Waddell cards seems quite far down the list. |

Here's the Elberfeld Washington that sold for $122.50 last November. The two previous PSA 1 examples recorded in VCP sold for $382.77 and $399.00 in July and August 2007, respectively. Those earlier ones were likely nicer examples, although T206 prices may have been generally higher back then as well. |

I think PSA 2 or 3 would be a better indicator; 1's can be all over the place and the price fluctautes greatly in this grade because of eye appeal and damage to the card. |

Agreed, Barry. Thanks for posting that image, Eric. And Dave, I think you are right about a listing of PSA 2s being more indicative of card value. Having mentioned that I can envision that Eric would be back to work on a PSA 2 list. But I have to figure that he's gone far beyond in putting the lists together that he's already posted. |

Assessing card value based on a single sale, even if it is the most recent sale that took place, is somewhat problematic, because of differences in card quality within grade, market movement over time (for the card, the set, and/or the hobby in general), differences in sales/auction venues and participants, and so on. I once asked Bobby Binder to modify the search capabilities at VCP so that all of the sales data for the cards in a set can be returned, not just the most recent figures, but he hasn't gotten round to it yet. At the very least, one could take averages across multiple sales, say within a particular time period, so that differences due to variations in card quality could be smoothed out. |

Here then is the list of the most recent prices realized for common-back T206's in PSA 2. The preference order for the top-tier Hall of Famers seems to be roughly Cobb - Young - Johnson - Mathewson - Speaker. And compared with the PSA 1 ranking, Elberfeld (Washington) has moved a ways up the list. Also note that the Magie error card is missing from this list; that would be because no PSA 2 example of that card sold during the time VCP has been collecting this data (for about the last three years I believe), at any of the venues that VCP tracks. However VCP does report several SGC 30 examples of the Magie card that sold during that period; the last one went for $13,145 in May 2008. |

VCP tracks Red Hindu, UZIT, Drum, Cycle 350 and 460, Carolina Brights, Brown Lenox, Brown Hindu, Broadleaf 350 and 460, Black Lenox, and Factory 42 backs as separate categories for reporting prices. All other back types, i.e. American Beauty, EPDG, Old Mill, Piedmont, Polar Bear, Sovereign, Tolstoi, and Sweet Caporal, are tracked together in the Common Back category. Are they throwing too many things in one bucket, in terms of making significant value distinctions? In any case, I wonder how they can even extract the back information in many cases, such as when it is not even mentioned in the auction listing where they are pulling the sales data. |
