Posted By: T206CollectorCan we get an agreement on the Top 10 T206 cards in terms of value in PSA 1 status? So, if you wanted to put together the 10 most valuable T206 cards in PSA 1 condition, what would they be? The top 4 are obviously the big four (Wagner, Doyle, Plank, Magie), but the next 6 are a bit tougher to delineate. I would guess Demmitt and O'Hara would be next in line, but at what point do the cards of Cobb (Green back) or Young (Portrait) intersect with the lesser variations of Elberfeld (Washington) and Smith (Chicago and Boston) or Lundgren (Chicago) in PSA 1 condition? 1. Wagner 2. Doyle 3. Plank 4. Magie 5. O'Hara 6. Demmitt 7. ??? 8. ??? 9. ??? 10. ??? Those would be the most expensive 14 T206s. After this, you get into questions whether Tris Speaker is worth more than the Young/glove or the Matty white cap, etc.

Hard to say which card is no. 15, 16, 17, etc. ... in that group you have the other two Mattys, Johnson/hands at chest, Young/pitching, etc. Also, at some point you get to Speaker, Lajoie, the team variations (Kleinow, Frank Smith, Lundgren), and the several "missing magenta ink" cards.

Posted By: Frank WakefieldNow if that long price listing was for PSA 1's, then we'd have something. Series 150 cards were subjected to a bit more wear than series 460 cards. The series 460 cards are slightly more likely to be found as an '8' than series 150's. The likelihood of any particular card being available as a '1' is more consistent than comparing '8's. So if that price list was cranked out for PSA 1's, then it would be more meaningful. FW

Posted By: Eric BrehmThe last Oscar Stanage was a PSA 8 OC that sold for $108.10 at Mile High Card Co. in Oct 2008. Apparently VCP doesn't distinguish on qualifiers -- although they do mention that the card was an 8 OC in the "Extra" column next to the listed price. Previously the Stanage card in PSA 8 sold for $2,901 in a Goodwin auction in Oct 2006.

Posted By: ebrehmThe sum of the most recent sales prices listed in VCP for 328 different T206's with common backs in PSA 8 (excluding the Gretzky Wagner) comes to $1,195,184. According to a T206 population report I downloaded a few months ago, and considering only the cards classified by PSA with "Unknown Back" (now comprising about 65% of the total number of T206's graded by PSA), 501 different T206 cards have been graded PSA 8 at least once, while 29 do not yet exist in PSA 8. I have not looked at the separate reports for the cards that have been classified under the new grading system by back type (Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Polar Bear, etc.), but I suspect that some of the missing 29 might turn up in one of those. I wish PSA would provide a population report that aggregates the numbers across all back types for each subject; it would make answering questions like this much easier.

The two previous PSA 1 examples recorded in VCP sold for $382.77 and $399.00 in July and August 2007, respectively. Posted By: Dave HornishI think PSA 2 or 3 would be a better indicator; 1's can be all over the place and the price fluctautes greatly in this grade because of eye appeal and damage to the card. I will say Elberfeld's (Wash) seem to be going for less than I would have thought these days (I bought mine a couple of years ago, sadly); are the HOF'ers holding value better than T206's of non-HOF'ers that are scarcer?

Posted By: Eric BrehmAssessing card value based on a single sale, even if it is the most recent sale that took place, is somewhat problematic, because of differences in card quality within grade, market movement over time (for the card, the set, and/or the hobby in general), differences in sales/auction venues and participants, and so on. I once asked Bobby Binder to modify the search capabilities at VCP so that all of the sales data for the cards in a set can be returned, not just the most recent figures, but he hasn't gotten round to it yet. At the very least, one could take averages across multiple sales, say within a particular time period, so that differences due to variations in card quality could be smoothed out. Now when looking at the total value for an entire set, using the last sales price of each card in the set isn't so bad, since you are aggregating across a large number of cards, and thus some of the unusually high and low prices for particular cards will tend to cancel each other out, similar to the effect of using averaged prices for the individual cards themselves. That is not to say that looking at the last sales price for each card in a set in a particular grade is a meaningless exercise -- while the above listings from VCP highlight some of the anomalies that occur, they still generally match most people's perception of what the relative values should be.

The preference order for the top-tier Hall of Famers seems to be roughly Cobb - Young - Johnson - Mathewson - Speaker. And compared with the PSA 1 ranking, Elberfeld (Washington) has moved a ways up the list. Also note that the Magie error card is missing from this list; that would be because no PSA 2 example of that card sold during the time VCP has been collecting this data (for about the last three years I believe), at any of the venues that VCP tracks. All other back types, i.e. American Beauty, EPDG, Old Mill, Piedmont, Polar Bear, Sovereign, Tolstoi, and Sweet Caporal, are tracked together in the Common Back category. Are they throwing too many things in one bucket, in terms of making significant value distinctions? In any case, I wonder how they can even extract the back information in many cases, such as when it is not even mentioned in the auction listing where they are pulling the sales data.

Posted By: Ted ZanidakisIn the 1st Series, the only back Jennings (portrait) is found with is the PIEDMONT 150. However, regarding the 350-type backs, Jennings was printed with EPDG, OLD MILL, PIEDMONT 350, SOVEREIGN 350, AND SWEET CAP 350. I should have qualified this. Thanks, TED Z
