Default Dog's Head and Old Judge Cabinet value?

Hi,

I have a Dog's Head and Old Judge Cabinet card. I'm just curious as to the rough value of it. I know it depends upon the player and the condition. It is an N173 SGC 2.5 John Ward. I also have a "regular" Old Judge Cabinet N173 of California Brown in SGC 2.5

Just looking for a rough indication of value.

Thanks!

Neal

That's about a $10,000 card you're describing.

A Dogs Head cabinet will trade at a premium to a regular N173 because it is scarcer. How much above will depend on how the cabinet looks relative to a typical Ward cabinet. It would help if you posted an image. The grade means relatively little because in their infinite wisdom grading companies do not take photo quality into account when assigning grades and to most collectors that is the most important thing.

Is it
478-3b John Ward (Cap in R/hand at side-L/hand on hip-Dogs Head)

No recorded sales in VCP but there are for 4 other cards of Ward

Are we all sure this isn’t an “Ahoy mate I just found one of these in my father’s garage” situation? We shall see….

Bobby--other than the portrait pose which is rare as a cabinet all the other poses sell for about the same amount so knowing the pose will not help valuing the card. Image quality and damage if any will determine value.

I just had a great chat with the OP (Neal). I can safely say he is a serious collector and is going to be a great addition to the community. I expect to see him in various sections of the forum too.

I assure you that it is a real question and a real card. I am not looking to sell it rather, just get some idea of value. I personally think it's higher than the $10k mentioned above but, maybe i'm just talking my book. I am a new member and I just verified with the owner of the site. i look forward to being a valued contributing member of the community. Thanks! Neal

Welcome to the board Nate. You really know how to start things off with a BANG! I’m not versed in the items you shared, so I’m no help in valuation. But I sure enjoyed seeing the pics of your amazing, rare items. Happy collecting 😀

Those aren’t great pics … but they’re good enough to see the image quality on those is CHOICE.

I just wanted to verify the pose we had on VCP for the Dog Head
and it was correct...had nothing to do with valuation

Default welcome

Welcome to Net54 Neal and my apologies for the skepticism..... looks like youve got some really prime pieces there..... the images on those 2 cabinets are really strong! So glad this turned out to be real (some like this have not!)..... and I agree the values may be higher than originally estimated..... my congratulations on owning items that most only dream about. Thank you all for your very kind words and informative replies. I very much appreciate it and I've recently started re-investing in the hobby.

Although this is 19th century baseball, i am on the hunt for a 1951 Mantle in PSA 6 if anyone has one looking to sell. I also own 75 of the 1958 Pele Alifabologet rookie cards. I'm always on the hunt for those if anyone knows of any leads regarding private sales.

Thanks again and I look forward to being a valued member of this community.

Having seen the picture now I recant my original estimate. I'll say $17,500 now. Funny you should mention the Pele collection as I was just looking at his cards in Goldin. Do you have any (either?) of his 1957 cards?

I don't have the 1957 as there are only a few known examples. There are many more undiscovered in Brazil. I went to Brazil to make a deal for that same card for $75k but, there was trouble getting the money into Brazil from the US in a manner that didn't cause tax issues for the seller. If this one goes cheap enough, i may end up with it. I think under $100k all-in would be a great buy on this but i may also decide that i have enough Pele already!

Thank you very much, Brent. I'm not sure how i missed that one so thank you very much for alerting me. The bids are already pretty high with 3 days to go. I think under $40k all-in is probably a fair price but we shall see.

Thanks again!

Hi Neal--very nice image on the DH Ward! I wonder why it only got a 2.5--is there a back issue? It's such a thin market that it is tough to accurately value a card like that. Based on scarcity and appearance you would think it is worth more than $10k, but I wouldn't be shocked if it went for a little less at auction or if it went for $20K. Since you are not selling it, it doesn't really matter. We picture some other DH cabinets of Hall of Famers in the Old Judge book.

Thank you very much for your kind reply. There is no back issue and maybe i'll consider resubmitting it as I agree that the grade seems low.

Thanks again!

Thank you. Got it from REA several years back. Not a HOFer but a good player and a nice image.

I have decided to list most of these cards in the Fanatics Premier auction that just went live today. I have listed them with no reserve if anyone is interested. I need to raise money for a 1951 Bowman Mantle PSA 7. Thanks!

I tried to sign up in the past but they require a cell phone (which I don't own, by choice) to complete registration. So now when I go to the site, this "complete your registration" screen pops up, not allowing me to even browse the auction since I *can't* close the screen haha.

I tried to register but doing so necessitates providing too much sensitive information to these people so I'll pass. Why you thought using this site to auction your cards rather than a popular auction house such as LOTG or REA is beyond me but you just lost an active bidder for your cards.

Fanatics which was PWCC is an extremely well known auction house that regularly sells 6 figure and sometimes 7-figure cards.
