Does anyone in here know much about MSA Discs...please let me know if I am missing any from what I have below, and that PSA will grade.

Those are awesome!
I think I have, somewhere in a box, a complete set of one of those. If I remember right, I think my version was one of the harder to find ones. But I will have to check and see if you already have it. |

There should be a 1978 Wiffle bat & ball sleeve out there somewhere with Al Hrabosky on one side and Bobby Bonds on the other side, but it hasn't been found yet. There are 88 discs in the set and these are the only two not confirmed. It would look like this one but with Hrabosky. ETA, I don't know if PSA grades these because they all have two factory made crease in them.

I've never seen that one Cliff.. will have to keep my eyes open for that one! I could really use another red barn and saga. Those two were the hardest for me to find.

Ben,
Looks like you have all of them listed, but I believe there are two Dairy Isle discs; one with a red back and one I believe is purple. Also, I'm not sure if you want to count it or not, but MSA had the Carousel variations (stamped backs). I've seen PSA grade them, but did not add the variation store/type. I collect Brooks Robinson and I have all of the discs raw (except for all the Carousel variations), but I'm slowly working on picking up PSA 9's or 10's of the discs as well. I have several to go on that endeavor, but it's fun picking them up now and then. Your Hrabosky discs look great! |

Cliff Bowman - I just finished a study of the wiffle ball issues. The 80 die cut insert discs come from 1978 and the discs printed on the boxes and the header sleeves were from 1979. I can confirm that Hrabowski is teamed up with Bonds and was printed in two colors pale yellow and navy blue. Wiffle sent me a scan of the orig print sheet.

The Red Barn also has variation with and without the address line on the back

I am concerned that those address stamps can be easily faked after the fact. I have one for a Zip'Z as well.

Any idea which one is the more common variant? Thanks.

The one with the address is much more common than the one without. I don't even bother looking for the no address version of the four Cubs anymore, never saw one.

the wiffle ball disc is actually 1978 NOIT 1977 or 1976 as you see them labeled. Hopefully you will see that corrected in the next ed of Std catalog. My info is straight from the Wiffle company.

Dave Kingman is listed as being a San Diego Padre on the 1977 Wiffle disc. He was traded from the Mets to the Padres on June 15, 1977, and then was waived by the Padres September 6, 1977. He played for the Angels and Yankees for the remainder of the 1977 season. That tells me that the "1977" set was printed sometime between June 15 and September 6 of 1977 and was issued in the summer of 1977.

The die-cut discs were released in 1978. No doubt about it. |

Here is a link to the checklists for the MSA discs and the different backs. For the discs from the late 70's Mr. Lemke's price guide has a comprehensive list.

All I can tell you is that I talked direct to Wiffle and the son of the inventor is now running the place. He sent me a copy of the 1978 and 1979 advertising sheets and these were the only two years that they offered discs. There is no question about this anymore.
Send me your email and I will send you a copy if you like. Lemke was also very wrong on the 2nd set (we now know as 1979) which were printed on the boxes. He said in the Std CAtalog that there were 88 cards on the boxes. There were only 12 boxes with 5 cards each so that's 60 cards in the set. The other 28 were on what they called "header sleeves" that had 2 players on each panel and were folded right through the discs. These are blank backed and I consider them a separate set. There are several of those up for sale on EBay right now. |
