Does anyone in here know much about MSA Discs...please let me know if I am missing any from what I have below, and that PSA will grade.
Al Hrabosky - MAD HUNGARIAN discs 1976 Buckmans PSA 10 1976 Carousel PSA 10 1976 Crane PSA 9 1976 Dairy Isle PSA 9 1976 Isaly’s Sweet William PSA 10 1976 MSA Blank Back PSA 10 1976 Orabker’s PSA 9 1976 Red Barn – out for grading 1976 Safelon PSA 9 1976 Towne Club PSA 10 1977 Burger Chefs Funmeal – out for grading 1977 Chilly Willee PSA 10 1977 Dairy Isle – out for grading 1977 Detroit Caesars PSA 9 1977 Holiday Inn PSA 9 1977 MSA Customized Sports – out for grading 1977 Pepsi-Cola Baseball Stars PSA 9 1977 Saga – out for grading 1977 Wendy’s PSA 10 1977 Zip’z PSA 10 1978 Wiffle Ball PSA 10 (I think it is actually 77 but is slabbed as 76) |

Those are awesome!
I think I have, somewhere in a box, a complete set of one of those. If I remember right, I think my version was one of the harder to find ones. But I will have to check and see if you already have it. |

There should be a 1978 Wiffle bat & ball sleeve out there somewhere with Al Hrabosky on one side and Bobby Bonds on the other side, but it hasn't been found yet. There are 88 discs in the set and these are the only two not confirmed. It would look like this one but with Hrabosky. ETA, I don't know if PSA grades these because they all have two factory made crease in them.

I've never seen that one Cliff.. will have to keep my eyes open for that one! I could really use another red barn and saga. Those two were the hardest for me to find.

Ben,
Looks like you have all of them listed, but I believe there are two Dairy Isle discs; one with a red back and one I believe is purple. Also, I'm not sure if you want to count it or not, but MSA had the Carousel variations (stamped backs). I've seen PSA grade them, but did not add the variation store/type. I collect Brooks Robinson and I have all of the discs raw (except for all the Carousel variations), but I'm slowly working on picking up PSA 9's or 10's of the discs as well. I have several to go on that endeavor, but it's fun picking them up now and then. Your Hrabosky discs look great! |

Mark, do you remember which year Dairy Isle has the color variation? I only have one of each - the 76 and 77 so i can't tell. And i only have one of the carousel stamps. Mine is from the #585 Madison WI store. i'm sure it would be quite a task to get all of those.

Ben,
Hmm... Maybe it's just the '76 and '77 have different color backs? It would surely be quite a challenge to get all of the Carousel backs. I don't believe it's even known what all of the locations were for these stamped backs. I think it would be cool just to get one graded by PSA and at least have a Carousel backed PSA label. |

Yea my Dairy Isle look just like those... My Carousel is the only one graded for Hrabosky and I got lucky with it grading a PSA 10. There is a very low PSA population for the entire set - just over 200 graded examples.

Looks like Brooks just has 2 graded Carousel examples both in PSA 9.

Yeah; it's likely the Brooks Master Set individuals who have the 2 graded Carousel examples. To me it would be much more interesting if they listed the locations on the PSA label.
Do you do the PSA registry with Hrabosky? |

The Red Barn also has variation with and without the address line on the back

I am concerned that those address stamps can be easily faked after the fact. I have one for a Zip'Z as well.

Yea. I know he isn't HOF material but I've always liked him and his antics.

The one with the address is much more common than the one without. I don't even bother looking for the no address version of the four Cubs anymore, never saw one.

I think there is a blank back version and a wax drink lid too.

I'm with you; I really enjoyed the way he went about pitching and the personality he brought to the game and it really didn't matter, at least to me, that he didn't have an overall HOF career. I'm not a Cards fan (or Royals or Braves for that matter), but really liked him as a player and sure enjoyed watching him pitch. I'll have to check out your PSA registry. |

If you are referring to the 1977 MSA 7-11 cup lid, there isn't a Hrabosky, the two Cardinals in the set are Brock and McBride.

Thanks guys...I will keep an eye out for the Red Barn - no address and the true 78 Wiffle Ball. Any idea why PSA slabs a few of these discs differently than the rest? The 76 Crane and 77 Chilly Willee are in square opening while all the others are fitted to the disc (graded at the same time). I thought all discs were the same size?

This link shows I believe every possible msa disc of Lou Brock, including the no address red barn and an msa sample lid using a Linnett drawing. There is also a discussion and listing of known carousel stamps. This the first page of three on mss in this thread Last edited by David W; 07-10-2016 at 06:47 PM. |

There were also 1978 disc sets for Big T Tastee Freeze and Saga. Was Hrabosky included in those?

There is a 1982 Burger King Atlanta Braves drink lid of Hrabosky as well. They're discs with a red rim around them to hold them on the cup and a hole where the straw goes through.
I can try and scan one that I have if you like. |

the wiffle ball disc is actually 1978 NOIT 1977 or 1976 as you see them labeled. Hopefully you will see that corrected in the next ed of Std catalog. My info is straight from the Wiffle company.

Cliff Bowman - I just finished a study of the wiffle ball issues. The 80 die cut insert discs come from 1978 and the discs printed on the boxes and the header sleeves were from 1979. I can confirm that Hrabowski is teamed up with Bonds and was printed in two colors pale yellow and navy blue. Wiffle sent me a scan of the orig print sheet.

Dave Kingman is listed as being a San Diego Padre on the 1977 Wiffle disc. He was traded from the Mets to the Padres on June 15, 1977, and then was waived by the Padres September 6, 1977. He played for the Angels and Yankees for the remainder of the 1977 season. That tells me that the "1977" set was printed sometime between June 15 and September 6 of 1977 and was issued in the summer of 1977.

Here is a link to the checklists for the MSA discs and the different backs. For the discs from the late 70's Mr. Lemke's price guide has a comprehensive list.

All I can tell you is that I talked direct to Wiffle and the son of the inventor is now running the place. He sent me a copy of the 1978 and 1979 advertising sheets and these were the only two years that they offered discs. There is no question about this anymore.
Send me your email and I will send you a copy if you like. Lemke was also very wrong on the 2nd set (we now know as 1979) which were printed on the boxes. He said in the Std CAtalog that there were 88 cards on the boxes. There were only 12 boxes with 5 cards each so that's 60 cards in the set. The other 28 were on what they called "header sleeves" that had 2 players on each panel and were folded right through the discs. These are blank backed and I consider them a separate set. There are several of those up for sale on EBay right now. |

I recently had my 1975 MSA Test Disc Tom Seaver graded. It received a PSA 5 grade. It's the first one ever graded. Does anyone have an idea on the value of it? I picked it up raw about a year ago for $100.
