guys saw these at an antique store 125.00 each. I was told they are Goodwin proof photos from the vermont find. These are large photos of Doran. Fantastic images. Should i call him back. NEED HELP. He also had a bunch of smaller images posted on a cardboard type of backing of a bunch of different teams. looked like they were cut to individual players. the large photos had Doran leaning on the bat (3) and (3) of him fielding. They looked right to me. Help

Those are different than the Vermont photos I've seen. The Vermont paper photos I've seen are all on very thin paper mounted on a carboard mount. Perhaps the others you mentioned are like that. I'd also want a better idea of sizes.
The cabinet-style ones were sometimes cut down from larger multi-player composites. So handcut examples are not abnormal. They're usually, though not always, on black faced mounts. Also, I've seen these photos in different styles, so I'm not saying a style I haven't seen before doesn't exist. The Vermont proofs aren't really proofs and aren't from the 1880s. The story is they were made in the early 1900s from the original negatives. As far as sales of these go, $125 is a good price. They usually sell for higher. One telling thing about the photos is the images are crystal clear with lush tones-- as they were printed from the original photos. The image quality identifies them as much as any other quality. Looking at the ones you pictured (slightly blurry photo), the format is unusual to me, but the image on the bottom player certainly appears of the high quality one would expect. these are atleast 8x10 and crystal clear. the other small ones 4x6 and on a cardboard backing with a texture type of paper. the larger ones pictured were very clear, brown sepia toned, high quality.

I'm not going to advise you to buy them or not buy them from the pictures you've posted. As I said, I've haven't seen the above format before-- but the others in the group sound consistent. If I thought the above were blatant modern fakes, I'd say so.
A person to ask is Rob Lifson (Robert Edward Auctions) as I believe he auction the entire find. Ask him if he'd seen that format before. Just as photos, if I saw them in person and thought they were old (early 1900s), I'd think that $125 each was a reasonable price. Last edited by drc; 04-15-2013 at 12:37 PM. |
