Blank Back Ruth rookie PSA 7 goes for $200K!!

That final price surprised me - I was thinking it would end closer to $100K.

Does anyone else think that card went really high?

Nearly every rookie Ruth card (not counting the 1914 Baltimore) in recent auctions has gone for way more than most people expected. That is one hot card these days.

I actually looked at this auction and that Ruth. Bill had another great auction with plenty of stuff but I think that Ruth is borderline 7 grade. JMO

There was a PSA 4 Ruth that sold for a really strong price recently. This card has just flat out taken off in terms of price.

Default the Ruth was pretty spendy all right

That very same Ruth card sold for $57K in Mastro's August 2007 auction. That's a healthy bump in price.

Default as expected

It seems the Ruth rookie is very strong nowadays. The T206s were very strong on the rare backs (15k for the BL460)....there were some other anomalies but overall it was about what I expected. Most of the E cards in average grade didn't do fantastic, nor have they recently. Overall it was a really good auction with a nice mixture of a lot of collectible cards. I walked away with one lower end e card for resale. There was really not much for my collection (not surprising considering what I collect). Nice auction overall. Now onto the several ending this evening...

I picked up one of the chopped off '33 Goudey Ruth's for cheap. I wish I had more money for tonight's 15 auctions. Best of luck to everyone.

Won a few e98s - dahlen, dooin and mullin. Was runner up on a couple others...prices for some of those seemed on the aggressive side

Tony,

Not surpised at all. If you look at the sales over the past year, it is steadfastly rising. I believe the Ruth rookie card is on the verge of being the "Holy Grail #2", and I expect its value to continue to rise, regardless of the grade. The dollar is currently worthless in this country and many high-end investors are beginning to move their money into valuable commodities such as premium cardboard collectibles.

Regards,
Joe

disagree totally here...anyone who travels to St Barth knows what i mean...those who make EUROS should be worried, not those that make US Dollars..Eden Roc here i come! the dollar hasnt been worth this much in the Carribbean paradise in MANY YEARS and it is only getting better as we speak..

I don't know if this was supposed to be funny but I got a good laugh out of the "valuable...cardboard collectibles".

Default Hope everyone was a winner!

Hope everyone was a winner last night.....er.....this morning! I couldn't believe I was up till 6:30 watching my bids! I came away with 4 of the 5 E98s that I needed and was bidding on...curses you Brian on the Dahlen! I thought the E98s went at a pretty fair price other than the ones that Pete mentioned. I was astonished at the price the Vaughn brought though. I know many of the E98s were lower grade, but some of them were really tough color/player combinations that you rarely see, hence why I feel that they went fairly priced in my opinion.
Take Care,
Good Luck to anyone bidding tonight on the other auctions.

Tim,

I was hoping you were in on a few of those last night. I'd say batting .800 you did pretty well! The light is growing at the end of the tunnel!

Best,

Andy

Default Thanks Andy!

Andy,
Yes, 4 out of 5 ain't bad (Was that a Meatloaf song? Something like that?)Anyway, overspent my budget as usual, but landed 4 of those really tough ones that have alluded me for so long- Bridwell/Red, Jennings/Blue, Walsh/Green, and Clarke/Orange. I was already way over my budget, when at about 5 in the morning, I got outbid on the Dahlen/Blue and just couldn't swing the approx. $400 extra to get it. Oh well, always next time!
Luckily, we had an ice storm during the night and school was canceled, so I got to get some sleep!
Hope you landed a few towards your Monster set project!
Take care my friend,
Tim

Default Goodwin Auction

Brian,

Not meant to be funny at all. FYI, the same people that perceive this statement as funny were most likely laughing at the "so-called" idiots that were spending up to $50-60K on beaten up T206 Wagners years ago. There is an incredible "hype" affiliated with collecting high-end items associated with America's foremost heroes (whether sports, hollywood or historical), and the rising price tags document that philosophy. Of course everyone is subject to their own opinions, and if you disagree I certainly respect your view.

Sincerely,
Joe

I think Joe makes very valid points.

Here's what I took home as I collapsed facedown at my keyboard at 6am.

I was the under bidder on the BL460 and Dahlen to the winner kudos and congrats etc.

Cheers,

John

Nice haul, John - especially the Dougherty Red Cross. I was beaten into submission before ever placing a bid

The M-101 and the 1914 Baltimore News Ruths are the most significant cards in the hobby, IMHO. Both the former in higher grade and the latter in anything with good eye appeal will be million-dollar cards within the next two decades, probably quite a bit sooner for the latter, based on its rarity. Remember the near $200,000 T210 Jackson? Quality baseball Americana will only be increasing in value over the long haul, although there may be a few bumps in the road along the way.

May your collecting put large smiles on your faces, and/or big bucks in your pocket, if your inclinations run towards the latter,

Larry
