Goodwin Results

Anybody stay up for the whole entire thing? Auction closed at 6:20 am eastern time. I got about one hour sleep, but totally worth it.

I was able to win the e104-3 Tom Jones, nice surprise win there.

Thought some cards went for a pretty good value, maybe it was because of all the other auctions going on simultaneously?

Two cards stood out in price - the e107 Dineen and the Broadleaf 460. Both great cards, but thought they went pretty darn high.

Blank Back Ruth rookie PSA 7 goes for $200K!!

That final price surprised me - I was thinking it would end closer to $100K.

Does anyone else think that card went really high?

Tony

Nearly every rookie Ruth card (not counting the 1914 Baltimore) in recent auctions has gone for way more than most people expected. That is one hot card these days.

I actually looked at this auction and that Ruth. Bill had another great auction with plenty of stuff but I think that Ruth is borderline 7 grade. JMO

sportscardpete 01-26-2012 09:13 AM

There was a PSA 4 Ruth that sold for a really strong price recently. This card has just flat out taken off in terms of price.

Bicem 01-26-2012 09:28 AM

Ruth price...

people have too much money.

nolemmings 01-26-2012 09:31 AM

the Ruth was pretty spendy all right

That very same Ruth card sold for $57K in Mastro's August 2007 auction. That's a healthy bump in price.

Leon 01-26-2012 09:42 AM

as expected

It seems the Ruth rookie is very strong nowadays. The T206s were very strong on the rare backs (15k for the BL460)....there were some other anomalies but overall it was about what I expected. Most of the E cards in average grade didn't do fantastic, nor have they recently. Overall it was a really good auction with a nice mixture of a lot of collectible cards. I walked away with one lower end e card for resale. There was really not much for my collection (not surprising considering what I collect). Nice auction overall. Now onto the several ending this evening... :)

I picked up one of the chopped off '33 Goudey Ruth's for cheap. I wish I had more money for tonight's 15 auctions. Best of luck to everyone.

shammus 01-26-2012 11:00 AM

Won a few e98s - dahlen, dooin and mullin. Was runner up on a couple others...prices for some of those seemed on the aggressive side

Runscott 01-26-2012 11:15 AM

I wanted the T206 Dahlen Brooklyn with the Old Mill back, but not badly enough.

'48 Leaf Fannin

I am excited to have pulled down the toughest card of my Uncle Cliff, his short-printed 1948 Leaf card (#123), in the Goodwin auction.

I wasn't up the whole night but I was up for most of the last four hours, watching this card and many others that friends were bidding on.

It was my first time doing this for an auction and I loved it.

I went to bed nice and early, but did win the E93 Jennings. I'm pretty happy with the price I paid.

jcmtiger 01-26-2012 12:09 PM

I wanted to upgrade a couple of my Old Judge cards, but prices were 2 high for me to bid.

Tony,

Not surpised at all. If you look at the sales over the past year, it is steadfastly rising. I believe the Ruth rookie card is on the verge of being the "Holy Grail #2", and I expect its value to continue to rise, regardless of the grade. The dollar is currently worthless in this country and many high-end investors are beginning to move their money into valuable commodities such as premium cardboard collectibles.

Regards,
Joe

I did...and I'm tired.

Sadly I was after the E107 Dineen. I bailed out long before the final price - nearly $3,000 - was hit. This card in this grade sold a few years ago for $1,650.

At least I got a couple smaller cards to add to my collection.

Cheers,
Blair

Got me the Gordie Howe rookie! :D

Got the Ganley Hindu T-206. Not as pricey as i thought it would be.

Tired as well. I was really interested in the card until it broke $2,000. $3,000 was a very, very strong price for the card.

The other e107's were pretty well priced, but the Dineen was clearly the nicest.

disagree totally here...anyone who travels to St Barth knows what i mean...those who make EUROS should be worried, not those that make US Dollars..Eden Roc here i come! the dollar hasnt been worth this much in the Carribbean paradise in MANY YEARS and it is only getting better as we speak..

Adam- i think you got the deal of the auction. i owned that very card last year, paid about $550 for it. i doubt it's fallen in value that much, you just simply got a great deal, congrats.

atx840 01-26-2012 02:35 PM

I missed bidding by a few minutes  If anyone on here picked up the 4 Cycle 460 backs I'd love to work something out on one of them.

I hung out with a couple of board members in the chat room until about 1:30 or 2. Just talking talking and looking at cards while the auction was going on. That was a lot of fun. But the chat room starting kicking everyone off repeatedly so we just got off. Shortly after that I passed out. Couldn't make it until the end. But I got my cards...E95 Willis, E96 Marquard, and E102 Collins. Overall it was really good for me.

Goodwin E98's

I thought some of the E98's were particularly strong....Collins SGC 60 $2,900 Mack SGC 10 $700 & some tough commons like Vaughn SGC 10 $700 Coombs Auth $400. Maybe a turning point in their soft prices these past couple of years.

E98s are still underpriced and it is still a good time to buy.
Picked up a couple of caramel cards, the Reulbach was a steal as was the Carrigan.

E98's

Yeah I had my eye on a couple of the E98's, but it seems like there's enough people collecting those right now. I think I'll wait until another time to get in.

Yeah, I saw that Willis sitting there with no bids and almost went after it. Very nice eye appeal for that grade/price.

Yeah I own the one from a few years ago and I was surprised at the hammer last night being close to 3k. And I agree, the Ruth M's are on fire recently.

I couldn't believe the price on the PSA 5 Dahlen Brooklyn card. I know it was an Old Mill back, but over $2700. + fees. It's a wonder what I can get for my PSA 6 Brooklyn Dahlen.

I don't know if this was supposed to be funny but I got a good laugh out of the "valuable...cardboard collectibles".

Hope everyone was a winner last night.....er.....this morning! I couldn't believe I was up till 6:30 watching my bids! I came away with 4 of the 5 E98s that I needed and was bidding on...curses you Brian on the Dahlen:D! I thought the E98s went at a pretty fair price other than the ones that Pete mentioned. I was astonished at the price the Vaughn brought though. I know many of the E98s were lower grade, but some of them were really tough color/player combinations that you rarely see, hence why I feel that they went fairly priced in my opinion.
Take Care,
Good Luck to anyone bidding tonight on the other auctions.

The M-101 and the 1914 Baltimore News Ruths are the most significant cards in the hobby, IMHO. Both the former in higher grade and the latter in anything with good eye appeal will be million-dollar cards within the next two decades, probably quite a bit sooner for the latter, based on its rarity. Remember the near $200,000 T210 Jackson? Quality baseball Americana will only be increasing in value over the long haul, although there may be a few bumps in the road along the way.

May your collecting put large smiles on your faces, and/or big bucks in your pocket, if your inclinations run towards the latter,

Larry

AndyG09 01-26-2012 08:40 PM

Tim,

I was hoping you were in on a few of those last night. I'd say batting .800 you did pretty well! The light is growing at the end of the tunnel!

Best,

Andy

Tim Kindler 01-26-2012 08:51 PM

Thanks Andy!

Andy,
Yes, 4 out of 5 ain't bad (Was that a Meatloaf song? Something like that?)Anyway, overspent my budget as usual, but landed 4 of those really tough ones that have alluded me for so long- Bridwell/Red, Jennings/Blue, Walsh/Green, and Clarke/Orange. I was already way over my budget, when at about 5 in the morning, I got outbid on the Dahlen/Blue and just couldn't swing the approx. $400 extra to get it. Oh well, always next time!
Luckily, we had an ice storm during the night and school was canceled, so I got to get some sleep!:p
Hope you landed a few towards your Monster set project!
Take care my friend,
Tim

Thanks Blair! However, I would say there was some luck to it. There were maybe 50 E107's in the auction and that probably kept things in some control. I also still kick myself for not bidding stronger on a couple of other Boston American's in that auction. I won a couple but a couple others got away. I wish you had won that card last night so we could have another monopoly on some certain Boston cards going :) Take care.

shammus 01-26-2012 10:28 PM

Hey Tim, yep...I kinda figured that was you. Seems as though we were pretty locked in a battle for the Bridwell and Dahlen for a few hours there. That particular blue Dahlen was one I owned before so was hoping to get it back again.

That Vaughn really went high! Glad I already had that one :)

Vintageclout 01-28-2012 07:19 AM

Goodwin Auction

Brian,

Not meant to be funny at all. FYI, the same people that perceive this statement as funny were most likely laughing at the "so-called" idiots that were spending up to $50-60K on beaten up T206 Wagners years ago. There is an incredible "hype" affiliated with collecting high-end items associated with America's foremost heroes (whether sports, hollywood or historical), and the rising price tags document that philosophy. Of course everyone is subject to their own opinions, and if you disagree I certainly respect your view.

Sincerely,
Joe

I agree - at least with regard to the one (Duryea) I was looking at. $680 for a common (albeit with a nice picture) was just more than I was willing to spend.
