In addition to causing me to stop buying "new" cards, the good news is that chase cards can be directly credited with causing me (and I'm sure others) to start collecting "old" stuff.

My response to (I think it was a Willie Mays) chase card in 1991 (or so), was to stop buying new cards completely and start working on my 1967 Topps set, my logic being "why pay $4 for new cards, when I can get 1967 commons for less".

Soon after, I discovered Tip Top Weeklies, Police Gazettes, La Press supplements, Harper's woodcuts, etc, etc.

So I suppose I should thank Upper Deck for screwing up the hobby.
