uooer Deck never cared, it was all for the money. They started the demize with there expensive prices back in 89. then they went to the memmoribilia cut ups. To compete, everyone else did it. Now the prices for cards are way overboard. Who the hell wants to pay $4 for 6 new cards. They drove the kids out. This will really hurt the hobby in years to come. Thank Upper Deck for all this. My response to (I think it was a Willie Mays) chase card in 1991 (or so), was to stop buying new cards completely and start working on my 1967 Topps set, my logic being "why pay $4 for new cards, when I can get 1967 commons for less". Soon after, I discovered Tip Top Weeklies, Police Gazettes, La Press supplements, Harper's woodcuts, etc, etc. So I suppose I should thank Upper Deck for screwing up the hobby. Doug |

I don't know if you can completely blame UD for "ruining the hobby". How about putting some (if not a majority) of the blame on collectors? If no one buys this garbage, they don't make it. They are only supplying what the public is asking for in most cases. I will say that my 11 year old son loves the patch cards, the more colorful the better, and it has done more to raise his interest in the hobby than any other thing he has come across. He pulled a Babe Ruth card with a piece of bat on it a couple years ago and that card has done more for sparking an interest in older players than any documentary or book ever has. I know that horrifies many on this board, but that's the reality these days.

I agree with Tony. I find myself picking up a box of the new stuff about once a month just for the chance of getting lucky... although I'm a gambler by nature anyway and I know the odds are slim. My 13 yr old son loves to help open the packs and search for the game used stuff and autos. If this helps to spike interest in the youth... I'm all for it.

I am a big fan of jersey cards but only for modern players. I don't like the idea of cutting up a Ruth jersey or something like that but a Peyton Manning? The guy probably wears 20+ jerseys a season. I have no problem with cutting up one of those.
