Default c. 1912 pair of Jim Thorpe TYPE I photographs...

the one on the left was taken by the legendary George Grantham Bain and on the right, just a split second prior, Bain's contemporary Paul Thompsom captured his version of the "World's Greatest Athlete."

I found these a few years apart and am still in need of a companion piece.

NOTE: Check out Thorpe's right calf

Canadian Olympic gold medalist in the 100 and 200 m , Percy Williams. Percy lived just a block from where we now live. His post-athletic career life was lonely and tragic, ultimately culminating in his taking his own life. The photo is about 4 x 12, and is signed "to the gang, Percy"

Jennifer and I were at the Opening Ceremonies last night, and they were fantastic in person.

Default Original Olympics

Thanks for starting the thread. it give me a chance to show one of my odder and by far my oldest sports memorabilia. The woodcuts below are from John Potter Antiquities of Greece published in 1697. The cuts are part of a section where Potter details the ancient games and depict the discus event and a brutal boxing event where the contestants would have there hands wrapped in "gloves" that would contain lead and iron. potter notes that contestants would prepare themselves "us'd all means they could contrive to render themselves fat and fleshy, that so they might be able to endure blows"

Default Miracle!

Hard to believe it's been 30 years already, since a group of young men united the country to the likes which may never be seen again.

I don't think I was ever prouder to be an American then when Al Michaels counted down those last several seconds...
