Show us your OLYMPICS Memorabilia
Now that the Olympics has started, let's see your cool olympics memorabilia. I don't have a picture, but I have a 1960 Rome Olympics first day cover postmarked and pictured of Cassius Clay with his gold medal on his neck, the day he won the gold medal of the olympics! I always liked the olympic Torches the most. What do you have??

the one on the left was taken by the legendary George Grantham Bain and on the right, just a split second prior, Bain's contemporary Paul Thompsom captured his version of the "World's Greatest Athlete."
I found these a few years apart and am still in need of a companion piece. NOTE: Check out Thorpe's right calf  Attachment 14077Attachment 14078 |

Canadian Olympic gold medalist in the 100 and 200 m , Percy Williams. Percy lived just a block from where we now live. His post-athletic career life was lonely and tragic, ultimately culminating in his taking his own life. The photo is about 4 x 12, and is signed "to the gang, Percy"

Thanks for starting the thread. it give me a chance to show one of my odder and by far my oldest sports memorabilia. The woodcuts below are from John Potter Antiquities of Greece published in 1697. The cuts are part of a section where Potter details the ancient games and depict the discus event and a brutal boxing event where the contestants would have there hands wrapped in "gloves" that would contain lead and iron. potter notes that contestants would prepare themselves "us'd all means they could contrive to render themselves fat and fleshy, that so they might be able to endure blows"

Hard to believe it's been 30 years already, since a group of young men united the country to the likes which may never be seen again.
I don't think I was ever prouder to be an American then when Al Michaels counted down those last several seconds... Attachment 14094 |

One of the bikes from the US team built for the team time trial in 1984. US finished 3rd. Not totally sure if this one was ridden, they built 12 and used 4.
The frame and fork are the only original parts, I made most of the rest since nearly everything is special and unavailable. Took me about 5 years to research what to make and get it done. It was originally labeled as a Raleigh, but was repainted and restickered for use in 1985 - original cost was pretty high, they claimed around 40K so they got a few years use out of it. I wouldn't be surprised if half the Snowboarders are as well, just not during the games of course. |
My wife's great aunt was the flagbearer for Hungary at the '36 Olympics, and was part of their gymnastic team that won the bronze. I can't locate the image of her marching into the stadium in Berlin, but did find a picture of the team practicing.
The family was deported during the revolution in '56, but was able to bring out the medal and a few other small items. http://photos.imageevent.com/griffin...20copy.tif.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/griffin...096431.tif.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/griffin...096432.tif.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/griffin...096433.tif.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/griffin...096434.tif.jpg |
Very neat, Anthony. A great heirloom and with monetary value.
Not Olympics, but I once bought for $10 a 1955 Russian track medal. Looking at it, my dad said "Isnt this for a World's Record?" I looked at it indeed was given to a Russian hurdler for setting a world's record. Resold it for $300. Owed my dad for that one. |
Ok, so it's not memorabilia, but here's a shot of the torch from my office (with 200 mm telephoto)

You have to move back here before you can share our pain; having an attack vicariously through your Canadian spouse doesn't count. However, I am going to the BIG game tonight: Czech Republic vs Latvia. Do I cheer for Jagr's hair, or do I try and learn Latvian by tonight? Max |
Not memorabilia. But I went to Atlanta 1996 by myself (nobody I knew wanted to go) and picked up the Bronze medal game of Baseball. Figured it would be Japan and someone else. Well the US unexpectedly lost to Japan and I found myself seeing the US and Nicaragua - a suddenly hot ticket. Decided against the easy profit and went to the game.
Walked into the stadium and found my section. The usher directed me to my seat.......I kept walking down......and found myself a few rows above the US dugout. Couldn't believe the view, must have been the only one to buy a single ticket in awhile. Also saw Michael Johnson's amazing 200-meter run. Place went crazy singing "Living in America". Also Dan O'Brien's Decathlon win. Great memories for a lousy $400 total. |
I don't have any old Olympic stuff, but I found this a few months ago at a garage sale, on the "Free Stuff" table. It is the 96 schedule poster for LSU baseball with the olympic coach Skip Bertman and olympic player, Warren Morris (who later that year had the GREATEST moment in CWS history). The poster was signed when I found it:
