Just my two cents--it could be a photocopy/shop job homemade card.
I would find it strange that some other "official" period entity would issue this card with "the Sporting News" identifier anywhere on the card. It just looks like that someone scanned the Sporting news card, changed the color, shrunk the image, did some other creative editing and voila.

It doesn't look real to me, but I am basing my opinion on a scan. Never the best way to authenticate.
