Default "GRAND SLAM" Painting by Spalenka

One of my favorite artists is named Greg Spalenka. I was lucky to buy this original collage painting from him titled "Grand Slam". It was used in a magazine article describing how baseball has become dirtied due to it's corruption of huge saleries, players going to anyone that will pay the most & such. It has ripped up little pieces of a real dollar bill and has some 3 demensionality. If you would like to see more of Spalenka's work, please go to www.spalenka.com

Default 1912-13 Minor League BIRMINGHAM BARONS Original Art

these are from a collection of 49 one-of-a-kind ink drawings on the message half (back side) of postcards, 16 of them (shown below) featuring cartoon-style Baseball drawings relating to the 1912-1913 Minor League (Southern Association) Birmingham Barons...the front side of the postcards features different views of Birmingham, Alabama (sadly, none of views on front includes Rickwood Field)

the final scanned image features Ty Cobb signing his famous 1913 "reinstatement" contract, and is postmarked April 27, 1913, just a few days after the actual signing of the contract (link for the 1913 NY TIMES article re: the contract signing): http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive...629C946296D6CF

Something really endearing about those cartoon postcards. I'm of the impression that "Bill" is a baby sending messages to his Aunt Minnie via the pen of his cartoonist father. Is that reasonably what's going on? Great baseball content, wish I had some of the B'ham T210s to show. Any chance you'll post some more of these?

Great piece from Monty, Robert. I'm glad I got to see it in person last summer, as well as actually meet the artist. Aside from having some great pieces he was able to show off at the National, he proved to be just a really nice person.

Didn't you end up commissioning a ball form him as well?

Speaking of Monty Sheldon, I believe he did some of the original artwork for
the Helmar Beer card set.
The cards are then size and look of T205's
Here's an original artwork that's almost 8 x 10" w/ the photo that the art was taken from
and the finished product on the Helmar certificate.

I really like what Charles Mandel and the Helmar crew are doing. Best modern cards going in my opinion. I picked up this original watercolor at the last Chicago National. It was painted by Kalaish Raj and is about the same size, a tad smaller, than a T3. Snapped this photo of Monty Sheldon; seeing all his stuff at once was incredible.

Default Birmingham Barons postcards

David:

your observation is right on, if I remember correctly.....I think there's even one that relates to "baby Bill" being born, although I only posted the cards which featured the better Barons-related drawings ( there are others with Barons references, plus some re: the life of "Bill" in general )...I'll dig thru the others and maybe even upload a few more images that contain baseball content.

Maybe it's a stretch to call this art, but I love the work somebody did to these cards...

This piece would seem qualify as folk art. I've always imagined that somebody sat around a stove at night all winter stitching all these silks together. There's a ridiculous number of Giants pictured here — I could almost reassemble the famous Giants team photo that spawned so many T206s — but somehow, there's no Matty or McGraw. I love all the color variations — every time I look on eBay, most that are available are white.
