Default fear of forgery

I'd describe myself as expert researcher, with considerable "book knowledge" on the hobby, but less "street knowledge" than the veterans.

Per the notion that newbies shy away from overprints due to the recent scandal, I have to admit- the first time I saw the Mullaney T206 with many overprints including Cy Young, (which I know a very well known collector picked up on eBay a while back), I thought it was possible that someone made it at home, sent it to SGC, had it slabbed as "Authentic," and got away with it because, the card was authentic- an authentic T206, altered, but authentic nevertheless.

I'm certain that the buyer I refer to knows substantially and infinitely more than me with regard to every aspect of the hobby, and likely has a bazillion reasons why my concern is completely unfounded, but just having that thought in my head, even for a moment, made me shy away from overprints, at least for the time being. I wanted to go after the recent E94 (or maybe E97?) Kleinow but decided against it, as I have much too much yet to learn on the subject.

Anyway...I opened this thread because I was curious about the 18 replies it got. This is an interesting topic- can/should it be moved to the main page?
