Bloome's Chocolate OP for Sale

Guys and Gals I hate to part with this item, but the reality of life has set in (the ole wife and I both lost our jobs).

I have an SGC 10 Sherry Magee E94 bloome's chocolate overprint for sale. I need it gone quick, as I have to build up the cash reserve to wait out the unemployment line.

I'm asking 950, but will consider reasonable offers (So please respect why I am selling this item).

Scans are available. Email me with any requests.

Thanks,

Mike

Wow, no takers? Just Smokey Joe's request? Is my price request really that of line?

Scans would help...

since you asked

Since you asked, No, I don't think your asking price is out of line. That being said it is about the retail price for that card. In today's economy folks aren't buying too many retail priced cards at a fixed price, especially ones for more than a few hundred dollars. They are waiting for auctions and hoping to get them for less. Just my opinion since you asked.

For me it's a fear as a result of the Patrick Chan incident that has me scared of overprints. I wonder if other collectors feel the same way?

Leon 05-19-2009 11:02 AM

overprints

Eric- Maybe a few newbies will be scared away. Folks that have been collecting a long time, and have gotten overprints from original collections, shouldn't be scared.I would be much more worried about mint or nrmt-mt pre-war cards than overprints.....but I am biased too :)....The Blomes is the most common E94 Overprint by far.....so collectors of overprints might very well already have this one. If anyone who is scared wants to sell your overprints cheap I am a cash buyer....send them my way, please!!

I definitely still consider myself a noob. I've only been in the hobby for 2 1/2 years and I've still got plenty to learn.

Good point. Provenance would definitely help.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking your thread Mike. Good luck with your sale, and I hope everything works out for you and your family.

I would be much more worried about a complete run of E94 overprints than some nm or better pre-war cards. :) Producing a few stamps is a lot easier than turning vg corners into nm/mt corners. Trimming is pretty easy to detect these days.

I don't think the issue is whether or not most or all of the current ones that exist today are real.

I think the issue is whether or not one could reproduce an accurate overprint today or in the near future.

Leon, can you please elaborate, not sure I understand your quote

Leon 05-19-2009 01:07 PM

Jim and Brad

Jim- yeah, just look at all of those fake overprints in holders that are floating around. :D

Brad- it is common knowledge that in early hobby years there weren't so many pristine pre-war cards. It is also common knowledge that trimming is rampant in our hobby much more so than faking an overprint. Even though 2 fake overprints have been caught recently it pales in comparison to altered cards in general, imo.

Here is my look when I see a high grade pre-war graded card-

Mike- sorry to carry on in your thread but maybe you will get more publicity this way. For the record there has only been 1 fake E94 overprint ever found.....I doubt we can say that about high grade trimmed cards.

arcadekrazy 05-19-2009 01:10 PM

No, I don't mind keeping this thread near the top :)

In the interest of creating an arbitrage opportunity, I'll cut the price to $850.00. I would really rather not list this on eBay (I HATE eBay with a passion!).

Leon, Don't want to be biased; is there a more common type that is prone for this claims "trimming/altering" such as T206's.

Leon 05-19-2009 01:53 PM

Brad

Any pre-war card is prone to altering.....In my opinion, which is not always the most popular, the higher the grade the more prone to alteration. Since T206's are probably the widest collected tobacco series I guess they would be more suspect....but to me that is based on the greater supply of them. Third party grading by a reputable grading company will catch the large majority of alterations.

Just my opinion too but if you collect grades 1-5, and have them graded by a good grading company, you are much less likely to have altered cards in your collection. Again, just my opinion.

rman--u and ur crazy future technology talk. if in the near future a stamp can be made to duplicate the OP, then in the distant future after that a time machine will be created where *I* can go back to 1910-1911 and scoop up all the MINT t206s and MINT m131 cobbs/wagners...who'll be laughing then?

i thought the 2 hof e94 OPs wagner/speaker in REA were bargains for the eventual owner. the e94 set price did not get a big premium because of the 2 cards like i thought it would. maybe i always overpay so i overvalued those cards. tbob/jkras/cabal did well on those, congrats!

Kotton King 05-19-2009 04:55 PM

Mike,

PM sent.

There were some good buys in the REA auction, especially in groups. Those E94's should have gone for quite a bit more. The little D359/E104 lot went for half what it should have as well as the Plows Candy lot....Then there were some astronomical prices too. It was a good day for buyers of groups of cards....

fear of forgery

I'd describe myself as expert researcher, with considerable "book knowledge" on the hobby, but less "street knowledge" than the veterans.

Per the notion that newbies shy away from overprints due to the recent scandal, I have to admit- the first time I saw the Mullaney T206 with many overprints including Cy Young, (which I know a very well known collector picked up on eBay a while back), I thought it was possible that someone made it at home, sent it to SGC, had it slabbed as "Authentic," and got away with it because, the card was authentic- an authentic T206, altered, but authentic nevertheless.

I'm certain that the buyer I refer to knows substantially and infinitely more than me with regard to every aspect of the hobby, and likely has a bazillion reasons why my concern is completely unfounded, but just having that thought in my head, even for a moment, made me shy away from overprints, at least for the time being. I wanted to go after the recent E94 (or maybe E97?) Kleinow but decided against it, as I have much too much yet to learn on the subject.

Anyway...I opened this thread because I was curious about the 18 replies it got. This is an interesting topic- can/should it be moved to the main page?
