The Gehrig is actually not that bad of a 1, all things considered. Value-wise, the trade plus $500 seems like a very good deal.

Why exactly was the Matty a "2"? Faint crease/wrinkle? Back damage or paper loss?

On the surface, it does appear to be as nice as many/most 4s I've seen.

I'd do it, but I like Gehrig better than Matty, so I am biased.

Take the Gehrig all day long! I’d put it in an SGC slab though

I look at Gehrig like he's the Beatles and Matty like he's Sinatra. Most people know both names but everybody can tell you a Beatles song.

If your game is long-term value, I think Gehrig will outpace Matty.

Me too. I like Matheson a lot, but I love Lou Gehrig, and the 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig is iconic. One of the best cards ever, just my little old humble opinion.
