Not sure what you mean but I saw Magic live in college. It's hard to understate how deserving of the name he was, or how revolutionary at the time it was to see a player of his size bringing up the ball, doing what he did with the ball or moving in the open floor as he did.

And is "Bubba Chuck" really Iverson's nickname? I have never heard that.

During his early childhood years in Hampton, Iverson was given the nickname "Bubba Chuck". A childhood friend, Jaime Rogers, said that Iverson would always "look out for the younger kids" and that "he could teach anybody." This is a copy/paste from a google search, I have always called him that. Last edited by bnorth; 04-07-2025 at 04:57 PM. |

Yeah, had he contracted it earlier I don't think the life saving drugs would have been available and his outcome probably would have been different. And of course he had the benefit of the best possible care.

IIRC Magic was spending something like $25,000 a month on drugs that almost anyone else would not have been able to afford at the time. Thank goodness the science has advanced to where it's basically not a deadly virus anymore. (For those in US, I should say)

I live in southeastern Pennsylvania and spent a lot of time listening to Philadelphia sport-talk radio during Iverson's prime. Bubba Chuck was definitely a nickname used for Iverson, although it did seem to fade out as his career went on.
