Is it common for those cards to have such a significant print shift? Was there a multiple part printing process for these cards? I am no expert on printing, but it looks like the sheet was fed crooked or not fully aligned.

Yes, all cards with colors are a multi part process.

Having those colors lined up correctly is registration. They seem to be using it to refer to centering, a completely different issue.

__________
It's very unlikely, but...
Because the setups for each color were done by hand, it is possible for the overall sheet to be in registration, but one position of one color to be off slightly and out of registration. Likewise, an entire position can be slightly out of place, and crooked or not centered.

Exactly. The eyes and the brim of the cap remind me of what is often seen in the Leaf set.

Default different AH, similar story

Couple years ago I inquired on this card because the auction picture didn't seem to match the description " ... along with a perfectly registered image ..."

The AH President/CEO replied later that day "It surely doesn’t appear to be out of focus to me. Maybe this one isn’t for you."

I would have passed on that extremely ugly card that has far from perfect registration. Cards like that with small registration problems just bug me. Now the Gehrig that has horrible registration is awesome because the registration is WAY off and I like the 3-D look of cards that have huge registration problems. Plus even 80s hookers didn't have as much of the cool looking eye makeup Lou looks to be wearing on that card.

I thought it was the rare, fresh to the hobby, newly discovered 3-D version?

Yeah the Paige card is notoriously out of register, and Feller.
