Heritage calls this “perfect registration”?

Umm…

1932 U.S. Caramel Lou Gehrig #26 PSA NM-MT 8 - None Superior!... https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-c.../70019-58268.s

Lucas00 03-18-2025 07:38 PM

Definitely not even close to perfect.
But I would be more curious about the red lines/ink marks on the back. Is that common for the set? If not this card is way over-graded.

raulus 03-18-2025 08:14 PM

Doesn’t matter. PSA says it’s an 8.

Plus…bonus sticker!

Looks like it’s bleed-through from the front. That one curved red line corresponds with his shoulder outline it seems.

"...exchange offer of a complete sets of cards..."

There grammer ain't goodly, neither.

Compare this one. Look at the eyes.

Michael B 03-18-2025 09:26 PM

Is it common for those cards to have such a significant print shift? Was there a multiple part printing process for these cards? I am no expert on printing, but it looks like the sheet was fed crooked or not fully aligned.

Exactly. The eyes and the brim of the cap remind me of what is often seen in the Leaf set.

"A" for afforable at 1/100 of the price!!!

Johnny630 03-19-2025 06:53 AM

Looks out of focus

tiger8mush 03-19-2025 07:25 AM

different AH, similar story

Couple years ago I inquired on this card because the auction picture didn't seem to match the description " ... along with a perfectly registered image ..."

The AH President/CEO replied later that day "It surely doesn’t appear to be out of focus to me. Maybe this one isn’t for you."

Yes, all cards with colors are a multi part process.

Having those colors lined up correctly is registration. They seem to be using it to refer to centering, a completely different issue.

__________
It's very unlikely, but...
Because the setups for each color were done by hand, it is possible for the overall sheet to be in registration, but one position of one color to be off slightly and out of registration. Likewise, an entire position can be slightly out of place, and crooked or not centered.

luciobar1980 03-19-2025 08:14 AM

Yeah it's pretty absurb... it's in fact very much not even good registration

Yeah the Paige card is notoriously out of register, and Feller.

I would have passed on that extremely ugly card that has far from perfect registration. Cards like that with small registration problems just bug me. Now the Gehrig that has horrible registration is awesome because the registration is WAY off and I like the 3-D look of cards that have huge registration problems. Plus even 80s hookers didn't have as much of the cool looking eye makeup Lou looks to be wearing on that card.:)

tjisonline 03-19-2025 10:58 AM

Extremely old PSA certificate ID also. Who didn’t know that would be the case. But hey, Ryan Hoge & other grading company reps keep telling us grading standards haven’t changed.

Collectors buy the Card
Investors Buy both the Grade and Grading Company
New Money Collectors buy the Grade because they
1. do not have experience
2. The Grade lets them compare the price/quality to others of same grade etc(for right or wrong)

I can also see stacking the fresh sheets on each other, with front ink transferred from another Gehrig sitting under this one. Worth calling out, either way!

I thought it was the rare, fresh to the hobby, newly discovered 3-D version?

I'm not saying they don't exist. I'm just saying I've never see a card with "bleed through" It's almost always either a wet sheet transfer or a wet cylinder transfer.

Now Cracker jacks are fairly flimsy, so I guess there's some kind of slight chance, but think of old books with illustrations. That's just paper. Ever see an illustration "bleed through"

When it comes to Goudey it gets a little absurd, those things are thick and heavy, printer's ink is NEVER penetrating all the way through that card. Hell I bet you'd have to sit there with a Sharpie in one spot for a LONG time before it soaked through.

perezfan 03-21-2025 05:35 PM

What a joke. The TPGs place such a huge emphasis on centering but rarely if ever punish the card for bad focus/registration.

To me, the latter is much more important... both are traits that are original to the card's original production, but the image itself should be considered more important than the centering. Just another of many reasons that grading is a scam.

As I've written several times before, in other threads:

The centering of a card is the one thing we can clearly determine without the "expert" opinions of third party grading companies. The fact that they place so much emphasis on that one attribute makes very little sense.

refz 03-22-2025 05:00 AM

Wow..
I’d rather have that 4 or A all day over that 8. Appeal means a lot!

What the… “For U. S. Caramel enthusiasts, an exchange offer of a complete sets of cards for a baseball and a fielder's glove in exchange for three complete sets is the fuel of collecting nightmares nine decades later.”

Like many other sets, completing the task to turn in for the prizes is nearly impossible because of the distribution or printing of certain card(s).

Pretty sure the Freddie "Charlie" Lindstrom card is the hard to obtain one for this set.

a) An intern wrote the item description (and they're clearly NOT an English major)

b) The person proofreading this description was drunk at their desk

c) AI

With grades like those there might be some hope for my Abe Attell, which looks great with 3D glasses.

Aquarian Sports Cards 03-23-2025 12:37 PM

That Attell gives a new meaning to the nickname Four Eyes
