I've never quite understood the hostility to this concept. Whether the man mutters to himself in Elvish and proclaims that his Lord Elrond has need of it, or that he has more into it than you're offering, the reasoning isn't particularly relevant. He's not willing to sell at the price that you're willing to buy. Your only viable alternatives at that point are to move along or make a more compelling offer. Giving him a lengthy pedantic discourse on the concept of sunk cost is unlikely to sway his thinking. I suppose when we're looking to buy something nice from a seller who isn't willing to meet us on price, it's only natural to get agitated at that outcome, which leads us to attack the jejune arguments proffered for why the seller couldn't possibly sell for the price that we're offering.
