Default willie mays story

Here's my favorite Willie Mays story.

Don Mueller, who played next to Mays in the outfield in New York, decided he'd mess with Willie Mays....

MUELLER: "Hey, Will, this guy in the newspaper says you're the best centerfielder
in baseball."

MAYS: (who wasn't going to take any stuff, said), "Yeah, best right fielder,
too."

Sad to hear.

I was reading the ESPN obit and looking at the graphics. They really messed up. They have him playing in more all star games than the number of years he played including BNL.

I predict that MLB will now soon coin a new seasonal honor for each league, naming it the "Willie Mays 5-tool player award."

Thank you, I had forgotten about that. It was from 1959 to 1962.

As soon as I learned about the backstory of this SI cover I knew I had to have one… its proudly displayed in my “card cave” and I enjoy retelling the story of the friendship of Mays and Durocher and the sad reality of the blowback SI received nearly 8 years after Jackie joined the Dodgers.

What a player - time for me to reread his biography.

When I was a kid, Willie Mays was everybody's favorite player — my first glove was a MacGregor Wille Mays model, and it was way too big for me, but I didn't care because it had his signature etched in it. A few years later, there was a display of all Willie's Topps cards in a Life Magazine, and I awestruck when I first saw it. A few months back, I began searching for an eye-catching photo of Willie for my collection, and I settled on this one from 1952 ...
