Just saw this too. Sad day.

jayshum 06-18-2024 07:06 PM

Wow, hard to believe. I just read a quote from him in the past few days that he wouldn't be going to the game at Rickwood Field on June 20 but that he would be appearing from home in some way so very sad and unexpected. RIP.

icollectDCsports 06-18-2024 07:07 PM

Oh, no. Great, great player. RIP

Here's his first career HR.

Thank you for signing another ball, which to me is "The Ball", Mr. Mays, even after I pissed you off.

Great scorecard! Embarrassed to say that I just learned he wore #14 at that time.

obcbeatle 06-18-2024 07:48 PM

The greatest all around player to ever grace a diamond, says me, who was lucky enough to have a Dad who took me to Candlestick Park between 1965-1971. Willie was my childhood idol (I played centerfield in little league because of Willie :) I can still see him making basket catches in centerfield, and rounding 1st base to stretch a single into a double. Memories I will never forget!

willie mays story

Here's my favorite Willie Mays story.

Don Mueller, who played next to Mays in the outfield in New York, decided he'd mess with Willie Mays....

MUELLER: "Hey, Will, this guy in the newspaper says you're the best centerfielder
in baseball."

MAYS: (who wasn't going to take any stuff, said), "Yeah, best right fielder,
too."

Michael B 06-18-2024 08:31 PM

Sad to hear.

I was reading the ESPN obit and looking at the graphics. They really messed up. They have him playing in more all star games than the number of years he played including BNL.

mark evans 06-18-2024 08:38 PM

Brings tears to my eyes. Simply the greatest.

For a few(?) years, two MLB AS games were played per season.

jcmtiger 06-18-2024 08:45 PM

That 51 Bownan is a great looking card.

You have the very ball that Mays hit for his first MLB home run? And it's even signed by Willie?

robw1959 06-18-2024 08:51 PM

I predict that MLB will now soon coin a new seasonal honor for each league, naming it the "Willie Mays 5-tool player award."

Thank you, I had forgotten about that. It was from 1959 to 1962.

Back in April 1969, there was a special Spring Training game at Yankee Stadium. It was between the Yankees and Giants. As a teenager, I was a big Yankee fan and wouldn't miss this for anything.
I cut out of school that day to attend the game. I brought my Super 8 movie camera along with me to film parts of the game. Here is one scene of the Say Hey Kid himself.

As soon as I learned about the backstory of this SI cover I knew I had to have one… its proudly displayed in my “card cave” and I enjoy retelling the story of the friendship of Mays and Durocher and the sad reality of the blowback SI received nearly 8 years after Jackie joined the Dodgers.

What a player - time for me to reread his biography.

Republicaninmass 06-19-2024 06:16 AM

Makes sense why so many 1952 topps Mays popped in my feed. RiP love him or hate him
