I do not have information regarding the value or scarcity of the composite that you've posted, but I want to point out that the player identified as Adkins is actually George Winter of the Boston Americans. I've included below the Carl Horner image of Winter and an Adkins image for comparison.

Wow. I have never seen a variation in the W601 Premiums before.
I believe that both of the 1903 composites that you guys have pictured are actually a part of the portfolio that was offered in 1904, which depicted the 1903 teams. I did not realize that there was a 1904 portfolio series. That seems like the likely source of the Adkins variation.

I have to disagree with your theory that both W601's originated in a 1904 portfolio. First off my copy doesn't have the holes on the left border for the string. It seems more likely that early copies sold as singles had the Adkins and later copies. Like the OP's copy with the 3 holes on the left border came from a portfolio.
