I have a lot of friends from Puerto Rico, and they all, all of them, revere Roberto Clemente. I gave a friend of mine a 1968 Topps card of his, and my friend was in tears. If there can be such a thing, he was Babe Ruth to them. And I remember myself being in total shock that he was gone. The seven game 1971 World Series is one of my all-time favorites. I am a Yankees fan, but I would be perfectly okay with the Pirates being good again.

I recall hearing the news when I was a kid. Was impossible to get my mind around it then and still now, really. Such sadness. RIP to a great man.

Still a role model 50 years post-mortem. RIP Roberto.

Roberto Clemente was my first favorite vintage player to collect. My mom gave me the pictured '59 when I was about 12. I'm sure this was her way of imparting some of the values he stood for upon me. It is a card I'll never part with.

He so transcended the game and is someone we can all look up to, regardless of our own background.
