50 Years Since Roberto Clemente’s Death
|
In September 1971, Clemente was included in that days' lineup by manager Danny Murtagh. It was the first time in MLB history that any team started a lineup comprised of nine players of color. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3b15f7882e.jpg

I remember been in shock hearing the news the next morning. Roberto had led the Pirates to a World Series Championship and won WSMVP the year before. After earlier in the year suffering the heartbreak of the Reds scoring 2 in the bottom of the 9th to secure a comeback walk-off win in game 5 of the NLCS, this was a double gut punch. Here are some of my favorites.

I have a lot of friends from Puerto Rico, and they all, all of them, revere Roberto Clemente. I gave a friend of mine a 1968 Topps card of his, and my friend was in tears. If there can be such a thing, he was Babe Ruth to them. And I remember myself being in total shock that he was gone. The seven game 1971 World Series is one of my all-time favorites. I am a Yankees fan, but I would be perfectly okay with the Pirates being good again.

I recall hearing the news when I was a kid. Was impossible to get my mind around it then and still now, really. Such sadness. RIP to a great man.

Still a role model 50 years post-mortem. RIP Roberto.

Roberto Clemente was my first favorite vintage player to collect. My mom gave me the pictured '59 when I was about 12. I'm sure this was her way of imparting some of the values he stood for upon me. It is a card I'll never part with.
He so transcended the game and is someone we can all look up to, regardless of our own background. |

Here are some of my holy relics related to baseball’s Patron Saint. I don’t often get to post over here. Thanks for indulging me.

Here are some of my Clemente cards. Picked up a 1963 Pirates team autographed baseball about 2 years ago. One of my favorite pieces.
