Every (Post) Number Deserves a Record

First of all.....did you know that the Philadelphia Phillies are the longest continuous franchise in Baseball history. The Phillies originated in 1893 (initially called the Quakers).

During these 130 years, the Phillies played in only four World Series. They lost their first two W.S. to the Red Sox (1915), and the Yankees (1950).

In 1980, the Phillies finally won the W.S. by beating the Kansas City Royals. In 2008 they won the W.S. by beating the Tampa Bay Rays.

My mathematical mind tells me that the magic # to their success is the number "8". At this rate their next W.S. victory will be in 2028

The Chicago Cubs of 1998 played 82 home games instead of the usual 81. Were they the first to do so? Look it up and find out. If some team played 83 you have a tailor made post to follow this one.

Ted—Not sure what you are talking about. The Chicago NL team has been a member of the NL continuously since 1876, the year the league started. They are the longest continuous NL franchise at the same location. The Braves have also been a member of the NL since its’ beginning but they have switched locations several times.

In 1968 Wilbur Wood became the first 26 year old to pitch in 86 games in one season.

Hint: The same could be said for 87 and 88 games in a season at the age of 26, but we haven't gotten there yet.



Based on the following two posts, I declare Wilbur Wood as the record breaker for 87 and 88 as well.

A few other corrections - they started in 1883 not 1893, and they have played in 7 World Series not 4. 1983, 1993 and 2009 were not listed.

Thank you Peter....that was exactly my point. And, this fact was noted a few years ago in one of my Net54 TRIVIA quizzes.
However, for whatever reason, Jay forgot my answer to that quiz..... 1883 Philadelphia PHILLIES.

Most hits in a season by an AL rookie pitcher (minimum 10 games pitched): 93 by Shohei Ohtani, 2018.

Ohtani surpassed the longstanding record of George Sisler, who had 78 hits in 1915 for the Browns and also had a 4-4 record in 15 games pitched.

In 1969 Henry Aaron set the all-time record for Sacrifice Flies with 94.

Of course he started breaking his own record before retiring.

We have gone thru this before; however, I will repeat. The Philadelphia team's NAME.....PHILLIES....is the longest continuous team name in Major League Baseball.

As you very well know, it replaced the name "Quakers" early in the 1880's.
