I have 7 cards at PSA getting crossed right now, however they are all low grade. So hopefully no big surprises but will follow up once returned.
As for getting an explanation, in the eyes of the grader they are grading it the same as any other card, and they don't give explanations on those so I wouldn't expect different with crossovers. They do allow you (actually require you) to choose a minimum grade you'd allow it to cross too. I think that kind of takes any responsibility for extra explanation etc out of their hands.
