The base is hollow. There is a slight indent on the bottom of the base where there likely was some felt that is no longer present.
The figure and the ball are separate pieces attached to the base.it seems. You can tell they have some decent weight to them. I really don't know much about bronzes or figurals so I can't really say much to the quality of the material but there is some very good detail and the wear patterns on it look right. I picked it up cause I try to pick up old sports when I can( it's getting near impossible these days), Soccer is an emerging sports collectible, and the price I was able to pay given the level of antiques at this show was shocking.
