President John Tyler has a living grandson.

Not great-grandson....a grandson.

My earliest TV memory is Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953. I get a kick out of seeing her being queen still.

Henry Allingham (British World War I veteran who lived to be 113) lived under Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI, and Elizabeth II, all before he was in his mid 50s. The rest of his life was all under the reign of Elizabeth II.

I was actually alive when phones had long, twirling cords and hung on walls. Let that one sink in.

And another grandson just died. This is the same John Tyler who was born in 1790 and became the 10th (let that sink in!) President in 1840 that has a grandson alive, and I think he's still in his 80s. I've been delighting in blowing minds with that one since I found out about ten years ago.

His grandson was born in 1928, so he is 93. He currently lives in Richmond, Va and was apparently quite the businessman back in the day. The William & Mary department of histoy is named after him.

Fun facts

John Tyler was born in 1790, so we can cover 232 years with 3 people. That's insane.

When Betty White passed, It was posted somewhere that the Yankees only ever won World Series in her lifetime.

One thing I love about our hobby is that it brings people of all ages together. I've had some great talks with gentlemen older than myself, about things we're collecting and what we are looking for.

As a child, going to card shows, it was always nice to not be talked down to by some of the older collectors. I've spoken about this in a prior post, but George Moylan (spelling might not be correct on the last name) is one of those people. He took about twenty minutes to speak to me at the age of 12 about the differences between the 33 and 34 Goudey sets.

Boston fans may pick up on this and dub this the Betty White curse if this trend continues.

My paternal grandfather was born in 1856. There were 31 states and Buchanan defeated Fillmore for the presidency. He'd turn 166 this year if he'd taken better care of himself.

Bacon is a stage name. Actually born Kevin Tyler, great-grandson to the President.

How about this?

There are lots of living great-grandparents these days, what with people living somewhat longer.

I'm 66; my maternal grandfather was born in 1888. So far, not so impressive.

But HIS father was 71 when he was born. I guess it was common back in the "old country" for a widower to marry a much younger woman if he was a man of means. Which in this case probably meant he owned more than two goats.

Do the math. My great-grandfather (about whom I know nothing whatsoever) was born in 1817. DURING THE NAPOLEANIC WARS!!! The President of the United States was James MADISON, one of the Founding Fathers (not that my great-grandfather ever heard of the United States!).

Yikes!

Alan

There are hypotheticals in law school property courses concerning the "fertile octogenarian." Not so hypothetical with the Tyler family.
