Yes, it's passion, but he wants to pump up his investments too. In other words, there is a financial motive for these long write-ups. I used to do this too years ago with soccer cards (when nobody gave a crap about them). My buddy David Peck did the same with wrestling cards. Today, look how much both sports are selling for. That's the power story-telling has.

Now, can anyone here please hook me up with an N162 Kelly? See what I mean?

I'd like to think Tanner is doing this for his love of the game and its artifacts.
Say it ain't so,Tanner.

I research and write articles for a number of reasons - primarily because I'm madly in love with baseball cards, their history, and I'm passionate about telling others.

I get super excited seeing people do 2 things: 1) discover how fun it is to collect / learn how deep you can get lost into collecting and 2) having existing collectors discover how amazing old baseball/cards are.

I'm constantly amazed at how little love pre war gets. In my mind, there is so so so much more to get excited about in history compared to the new stuff.

With all that said, I do know that shedding light on cards can certainly have an impact on values, (and certainly would love to see my cards increase in value!) but no, that isn't why I write.

I just saw this—great job Tanner. Sometimes it just takes fresh eyes to make new observations and you provided that and made a great Cartophilic discovery.

Tanner, that was a fun and informative read. If you are really going to look for a first edition of Casey, there are a few known appearances in books that actually predate the accepted 1901 edition, if that makes a difference. I have had 2 that I traded to a baseball book collector and I am aware of at least one other. There is a bibliography by Gardner that is a good book for information but may be a bit outdated.
I have seen very early appearances in books which list other authors for the work. A fun thing to look for are the appearances of the poem associated with Harvard reunions.
I have also seen the nice 1912 edition inscribed by Thayer as “Phin “, so be on the lookout.
