Thank you everyone. To be clear, neither the buyer or Tony was the first to talk to me about the card and everyone had the same offer. I get why Tony is mad and I have no reason to believe that he is anything other than honorable. If he wishes to be upset with me that is his right. I had multiple inquiries and I accepted the first firm commitment to buy. The buyer inquired about another card and I had to decline that inquiry since another buyer had committed to that card. It is always going to be hard when there are multiple interested parties. I tried to be as fair as possible and if someone is upset I truly regret that. If people want to bash me on this it is fine, but I do want to emphasize that I am not mad at Tony. Another buyer committed literally as I was responding to his request for additional pictures. Tony was acting in good faith and I appreciate that.

Just wanted to add that I bought a card from Robert and have inquired about several others and my card was delivered the next day and Robert has replied to my questions very quickly - he is great to deal with IMO.

Just to be clear, I was not bashing you. I misunderstood and thought you were negotiating price, if it was only at the stage of him requesting more pics, then you did nothing wrong selling. My apologies.

We were negotiating price, Jim. In every sale I've done, the first offer made always got a heads up if someone makes a better offer. I give them the option to match the price or surpass it. That's always been my method and I've been given an opportunity to up my offer on cards I've been negotiating over. Generally, people will state up front in their sale that "SOLD" or "I'll take it" trumps all negotiating. Anyway, that's how I've always operated and will continue to. Seems to be the fairest method in my opinion. I don't have any grudge or resentment. Just disappointed.

That's the nature of the beast. It happens. In all my years of collecting as well as being in my own business for 20 years, I HAVE NEVER dealt with anyone who is more above board than Rob. He is among the BEST of the Best, At the top PERIOD IMHO. That's what happens when you price your "Handpicked" highly sought after cards for a fair value.

Enter into negotiations and run the risk someone steals it will a flat our acceptance of requested price. How it works.

Yes, this. You cant possibly expect the seller to juggle various negotiations when someone offers to "take it" at the advertised price.

Not expecting seller to juggle anything. I had made an offer, requested an additional pic and we were negotiating price. All I asked was just a heads up that someone else had offered to take it at asking price. I would have most likely matched it. I guess I handle my sales differently. To each his own.

If that were not the case, you’d back bid every card immediately, just to get the free option of getting last look.

If a buyer is coming in right at the seller’s level, the seller owes nothing to anyone else.

From a sellers point of view.

If a buyer is coming in right at his level, any hesitation on his part gives the buyer license to back out.

A seller would not, and should not, risk that.

Elliot, there are a lot of factors involved. The winner did not pay posted asking price. It was a separate negotiation. I was also under the assumption (probably incorrectly) that the "I'll take it" policy was only in effect if stated in the sale as many sellers do, but not all. I for one will continue to give a heads up to potential buyers in the order I was contacted and give them the option. I always thought that was fair.
