By those criteria, Chipper Jones and Miguel Cabrera should be on your list.

If we want a true top 100 list, take the top 20 rookie cards per decade and count the player's whole career. Many of those guys who are top 5 only counting the years of the decade, wouldn't even make a top 20 list. For basketball, Bill Russell just missed the 50s list because he doesn't have enough time and Jabbar only gets one year, no chance at making it. For baseball, guys like Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson and Ken Griffey Jr only get one year, so again no chance. For the OP, Carew, Bonds and Peyton Manning, not enough time to make the list. Brown and Walter Payton would be close, probably not top 5, but top 20. Last edited by rats60; 12-05-2019 at 08:36 AM. |

I guess I was trying to come up with my own list of my own top 100; perhaps 15-20 per decade per sport. My wife says I need to improve my communication skills so anyone that can reword for me, I appreciate it. But I thought as us collectors would have much more insight.

The { BIG } problem is , this point ! A lot of these players have there ROOKIES in a decade & didn't play /played vary little in that decade ? SO, with that said , MOST of there stats are in the FOLLOWING decade ?????

I'm going to play by my own rules.
Greatest player with a rookie card in the corresponding decade: 1950s: Willie Mays. At their respective peaks Mantle was comparable, but Mays kept it up much longer. 1960s: Johnny Bench. This pick makes me wonder if I'm forgetting someone. He was great and all, but it sure is a drop-off from the 50s. 1970s: Mike Schmidt. The greatest third baseman of all time. 1980s: Barry Bonds. Second only to Ruth. 1990s: Alex Rodriguez. 2000s: Albert Pujols. 2010s: Mike Trout. This one is way early - who knows what Juan Soto will end up doing - but I'm still comfortable with it. There are two things that make Trout so astoundingly great: he was great extremely young, and he's extremely consistent. Think about this: excepting his cup of coffee in 2011, the year in which he had his WORST on-base percentage he also won the MVP award. By WAR the year in which he had his second-lowest score he won an MVP award. And his third lowest. He's an MVP-caliber player even when he's not playing well (by his standards). |

Baseball
00s: Honus Wagner 10s: Shoeless Joe Jackson (if I have to exclude T206ers, otherwise Walter Johnson) 20s: Frankie Frisch (lol rookie card rule is hard here, really want Rogers Hornsby) 30s: Lou Gehrig 40s: Lou Boudreau 50s: Willie Mays 60s: Juan Marichal 70s: Bert Blyleven 80s: Rickey Henderson 90s: Frank Thomas (probably Jeff Bagwell, but I think he was juicing) 2000s: Albert Pujols 2010s: Mike Trout |

I have seen nothing but rumors about Bagwell, so he is on my list. I go by the original definition for RC, so the 2009 Bowman Chrome Trout is his RC, not the rookie logo card. I would rate Gibson over Koufax.
I think I would rate Murray over Molitor who never did much for me. I would take The Big Unit over Boggs.

Starr over Lane? I'd be tempted to take Ed Reed over Tomlinson.
