So lets have a little fun with all the negitivity in the hobby
So watching the commercials for the 100 greatest football players got me thinking; so lets have a fun thread; I'll start with football & baseball, since that's what I know off top of my head {if anyone knows hockey and basketball feel free to add. Let's come up with our own list of top 20 per decade only 3 rules {1} player had to have a rookie card in that decade {2} up to 5 players per decade {3} no criticizing anyone's picks in a negative or mean way {except for corrections of course}
Lets change rule #2; up to 5 players per decade allowed Here's my guesses Baseball: 50's............Mickey Mantle 60's............Rod Carew 70's............George Brett 80's............Barry Bonds 90's...........need to think about 2000's........Anyone's Guess Football 50's..............Jim Brown 60's..............need to think about 70's..............Walter Payton 80's..............Jerry Rice 90's..............Peyton Manning 2000's...........Tom Brady So who you got????????????? |
Rookie card thing is tough with the older issues...need to revise my list.

Basebatt
50s Mickey Mantle but not by much, some great players in that decade. 60s Hank Aaron by a mile. 70s Tom Seaver he sure was terrific. 80s Wade Boggs 352 batting average for the decade. 90s Roger Clemens with Greg Maddux a close second. 00s Albert Pujols and it isn't even close. Those are my picks.:D EDIT: just notice the rookie part so will have to change my picks. |

I liked a lot of the original picks. But being a Cardinal fan may sway my vote for Brock in the 60's. It was either him or Bob Gibson. But Gibby would be the 50's.
Baseball 50's.........Willie Mays 60's.........Lou Brock 70's.........George Brett 80's.........Barry Bonds 90's.........Alex Rodriguez 2000's......Albert Pujols Football 50's..............Jim Brown 60's..............Dick Butkus (named most feared tackler of all time) 70's..............Walter Payton 80's..............John Elway 90's..............Peyton Manning 2000's...........Tom Brady |
Baseball
50s Willie Mays 60s Pete Rose 70s Mike Schmidt 80s Barry Bonds 90s Ivan Rodriguez 00s Albert Pujols |
This thread looks like one of mine, in which the rule breakers outnumber those who are able to read and comprehend the rookie card proviso.
Without the RC rule, one could use Minnie Minoso in five different decades.:eek: I can empathize with the OP though and will graciously withdraw from the chaos. |
Corrections were allowed right?

Although his RC is from 1969, gotta give the 70's to 'Mr. October,' Reginald Martinez Jackson.

Someone brought up Reggie Jackson, I could see why u want to list him as a 70's contender, his rookie was 1969, But does he make the top 5 of 60's players, whose rc was in the 60's? actually, maybe. It doesn't matter when their career ended. |

If we want a true top 100 list, take the top 20 rookie cards per decade and count the player's whole career. Many of those guys who are top 5 only counting the years of the decade, wouldn't even make a top 20 list. For basketball, Bill Russell just missed the 50s list because he doesn't have enough time and Jabbar only gets one year, no chance at making it. For baseball, guys like Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson and Ken Griffey Jr only get one year, so again no chance. For the OP, Carew, Bonds and Peyton Manning, not enough time to make the list. Brown and Walter Payton would be close, probably not top 5, but top 20. |

The { BIG } problem is , this point ! A lot of these players have there ROOKIES in a decade & didn't play /played vary little in that decade ? SO, with that said , MOST of there stats are in the FOLLOWING decade ?????:eek:
|
I'm going to play by my own rules.
Greatest player with a rookie card in the corresponding decade: 1950s: Willie Mays. At their respective peaks Mantle was comparable, but Mays kept it up much longer. 1960s: Johnny Bench. This pick makes me wonder if I'm forgetting someone. He was great and all, but it sure is a drop-off from the 50s. 1970s: Mike Schmidt. The greatest third baseman of all time. 1980s: Barry Bonds. Second only to Ruth. 1990s: Alex Rodriguez. 2000s: Albert Pujols. 2010s: Mike Trout. This one is way early - who knows what Juan Soto will end up doing - but I'm still comfortable with it. There are two things that make Trout so astoundingly great: he was great extremely young, and he's extremely consistent. Think about this: excepting his cup of coffee in 2011, the year in which he had his WORST on-base percentage he also won the MVP award. By WAR the year in which he had his second-lowest score he won an MVP award. And his third lowest. He's an MVP-caliber player even when he's not playing well (by his standards). |
