It is the first postwar set to have all of the best current players. The design isn't the most popular but 57 and before Topps didn't have Musial and 59-60 didn't have Ted Williams. It like 1956 are good entry points. No difficult series or high priced rookie cards make it easy to complete.

I have a nostalgic attachment to it as '58s were the first cards I remember seeing and holding in my hand. They belonged to a kid down the street and I remember being mesmerized by them.
I built the set over a couple of years, finishing last year and I became more and more won over as I filled the binder pages. As you said, it doesn't get a lot of love from collectors but I really enjoy flipping thru the pages of the binder. I've been slowing blogging it, card by card, for awhile. I'm stalled now due to a lot of outside factors but I'll pick it up soon.

It was the first set I built. I liked it enough to build it. It had all of the stars of the day as well as All Stars (first I can remember all stars having a subset if you will in a set). Started by buying 2 cards and went from there. Traded for most, if not all, of the commons. Had to buy a few stars. Wound up spending about $500 to put the set together in Ex condition. That was over the course of 2012. It took me a year, and I said never again would I build another set if it takes that long. That is too long for a set to take to build.
I finished it in late 2012, and I sold it in April 2013 for $1,500. So I was able to triple my money. Looking back, I wish I'd have kept it.

The yellow 'Lemke' Bouchee fills the appropriate slot in my 58 binder. Bob was the best.

It is one of my least favorite and the first sign that Topps won the bubble gum card war and was putting it in cruise control. It seems like 59 was a combination of 57 and 58 - the 58 backgrounds with a hole cut in it and pictures of the player coming through.
It also seems like it has less gloss than 57 or 59 - thus seems tougher for a card to really pop.

I like the look of the all stars, especially the Mantle. I'm thinking of just putting together the All-Star subset.

The first set after West Coast expansion, so it's got an historical twist but the card stock is for the birds.

Thx all. I am not a fan of headshots in other years, but in this year there are so many I kind of like them. The replacement all stars seem like they should be lower cost and the sp's higher, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I have never seen the Herrera without the a. The 61 football almost seems like a copy of this set.
The real only thing I don't prefer on this year is the 1 line stats. billp |
