1958 topps set
I have been focused on this set for a few months and am interested on folks feedback on it. I know it is probably one of the least popular sets in that era. No real high numbers, variations yes, but a lot of headshots too.
Open up for general comments on it. thx billp |
It is the first postwar set to have all of the best current players. The design isn't the most popular but 57 and before Topps didn't have Musial and 59-60 didn't have Ted Williams. It like 1956 are good entry points. No difficult series or high priced rookie cards make it easy to complete.

I have a nostalgic attachment to it as '58s were the first cards I remember seeing and holding in my hand. They belonged to a kid down the street and I remember being mesmerized by them.
I built the set over a couple of years, finishing last year and I became more and more won over as I filled the binder pages. As you said, it doesn't get a lot of love from collectors but I really enjoy flipping thru the pages of the binder. I've been slowing blogging it, card by card, for awhile. I'm stalled now due to a lot of outside factors but I'll pick it up soon. |
It was the first set I built. I liked it enough to build it. It had all of the stars of the day as well as All Stars (first I can remember all stars having a subset if you will in a set). Started by buying 2 cards and went from there. Traded for most, if not all, of the commons. Had to buy a few stars. Wound up spending about $500 to put the set together in Ex condition. That was over the course of 2012. It took me a year, and I said never again would I build another set if it takes that long. That is too long for a set to take to build.
I finished it in late 2012, and I sold it in April 2013 for $1,500. So I was able to triple my money. Looking back, I wish I'd have kept it. |
The yellow 'Lemke' Bouchee fills the appropriate slot in my 58 binder. Bob was the best.

It is one of my least favorite and the first sign that Topps won the bubble gum card war and was putting it in cruise control. It seems like 59 was a combination of 57 and 58 - the 58 backgrounds with a hole cut in it and pictures of the player coming through.
It also seems like it has less gloss than 57 or 59 - thus seems tougher for a card to really pop. |

I like the look of the all stars, especially the Mantle. I'm thinking of just putting together the All-Star subset.

The first set after West Coast expansion, so it's got an historical twist but the card stock is for the birds.

Thx all. I am not a fan of headshots in other years, but in this year there are so many I kind of like them. The replacement all stars seem like they should be lower cost and the sp's higher, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I have never seen the Herrera without the a. The 61 football almost seems like a copy of this set.
The real only thing I don't prefer on this year is the 1 line stats. billp |
i love the set. The background colors scream the 1950's more than any other set of the decade imo.

Whammy?? WTF?

Beautiful Don Mossi card in the 58s. First vintage set I put together. Actually just bought a collection tonight. I was only able to upgrade a couple of my set, but did pick up a nice starter set I am hoping to sell.

Love the 1958 Set. That was the first complete set I sent away for as a kid. I think the ads were in " The Sporting News". I remember thru out the summer receiving each series. I love the "Yellow "Variations ( had to fill these in later ). Basic set is not hard, but has a lot of superstars ! Master Set is challenging ! Yellow variations of Aaron,Clemente,Kaline etc. Around 40+ legit variations ( yellow variations and some checklist variations).

Randy jackson voice: It’s a no from me dog ! I disliked portrait cards and the color backgrounds. I like the all stars though.

This was the first true vintage set I put together. Took me a little over year, which in my opinion, was way, way, way too long. I ended having about $500 into it in Ex to NM condition thanks to trading for a large portion of them and buying lots/selling extras for more of it. I sold it about a year later for $1,500, so I tripled my money. I used the money from the sale to go to Disney World for the first time. Loved the trip, and we've been 8 times since then now, but I really regret selling that set.

I'm currently working on the set !! I like it, but I found I like the 1957 set better. I will keep going to finish it, not in a real hurry.

I love the 1958 set. I remember opening many packs when I was a kid. I never did put together a set, but the cards made a great sound when my friends and I used clothes pins to clip them to our bicycle spokes. I remember putting Mantles and Aarons on my spokes. It was fun, and the cards had little value back then.
