Following the 1890 season, both the National League and the Players’ League were struggling financially. In an effort to strengthen the League for a then anticipated 1891 season, Players’ League executives decided to eliminate the Buffalo team, the weak sister of the League, and replace it with a stronger franchise. With this in mind, on October 4, 1890 a group of Players’ League representatives purchased the Cincinnati National League franchise to replace Buffalo. The document below is the original sale document for this transaction. However, over the next several months the Players’ League collapsed as many of its’ financial backers became convinced that fighting the National League for another season was not worth it. With the collapse of the Players’ League Cincinnati found its’ way back into the National League for the 1891 and all subsequent seasons.
