I have my first bleach candidate. I will need to re-read past posts but will let the group know how it turns out! I have a more dear pennant that I'm considering, but I have to start somewhere!

You're welcome Erik!
Regarding your bleaching candidate...What year is that from approximately? It looks like a pretty early Royals pennant, but that would place it in the late 60's, early 70's timeframe, no? |

![]()
That would be my guess, too. Although I've not found something to compare it against specifically.
Related, has anybody else noticed the KC Royals and San Diego Padres are not in the pennant guide? Or am I missing something very obvious (likely to be the case) ![]() |

I've noticed. The guide pretty much cuts off after the 1960s, right around the time those teams came into existence. No Expos, Blue Jays or Mariners either. Stuff from the 70s is too common and not worth enough...though some of my favorite pennants are rare 1970's issues.
The reason I asked is, I have not had as much luck bleaching 1970s pennants as I have older ones. The stiffer material doesn't really whiten much in my experience. I think Rob (the original Rob) has had better luck. What is yours made off? |

I have not gone through and read all the posts but - where do I find the pennant guide? I have a few Cubs pennants that I would like to see if I can get closer than "Mid-1950's maybe" "Late 1960's early 1970's". I am in the process of placing them all in sleeves and putting them on the ceiling of my Cubs/Bears room. Thanks.

Google 'Egner Pennant Guide'. It's the second edition and a good source of information. You will find many places to purchase it.
I've only been a part of this forum for a few months and there is a tremendous amount of knowledge and expertise with the active participants. Quote:

It's is definarly more stiff than the older felt material, but seems less 'synthetic' than current pennants. Late 60's Le 70's is likely right on. I feel good about trying this one...but I have a mid 70's 'New Minnesota Fighting Saints' one I'm a little more apprehensive about trying.
Wish me luck!! Quote:

I only collect hockey pennants. Can't wait to share what I have. Here's one I just got: 1930s Montreal Maroons wool pennant with a mini stick still attached. Took me almost a decade to find one. |

This Toronto Blueshirts pennant from 1914 is the crown jewel of my collection with Captain Jack Marshall on the front. This is from the National Hockey Association before the NHL was created. Jack Marshall helped the Blueshirts win the Stanley Cup in 1914 as both a player and manager. I probably have 200 hockey pennants if not more. Most very, very rare.

Some more. Have to take more photos.
First game pennant from the Quebec Nordiques in 1979 against the Atlanta Flames and a 1974 Kansas City Scouts first game against the Chicago Blackhawks, and another from 1976 when the Kansas City Scouts played a series against the Washington Capitals. |

I'm thinking about framing my pennants soon. What frames do you guys use? Do you have them framed by professionals or do you frame them up yourself?
Thank you, Mike

Doing it yourself can cost 1/4 to 1/10th as much money. I do all of mine myself. Here's a good rule of thumb for many people (depending on their budget...)
If the pennant is worth over $400, then perhaps consider professional framing. If it's under a $400 pennant, then the project is probably not worth it. The custom framing could cost more than the pennant itself (which makes little sense). Aaron Bros. always has a nice selection of ready-made frames. Check out the ones that are made to display 3 photos horizontally. Those usually work well for pennants (but not always). Those "ready made" frames already have the glass and the backing. Then you'll just need to choose a mat (which the pennant will rest on top of). Choose a subtle colored mat that has the same outer dimensions of the frame. They will cut it for you on the spot. It's a piece of cake to put it together, and will cost about $55 instead of $400. Plus, Aaron Bros. has a permanent on-line coupon, good for 50% off any one item. Just Google "Aaron Brothers Coupons" and you'll find it. |

I've been doing these myself (online), getting the frame, glass with UV protection and non-glare, and backing for about 1/4 of the cost of shops like Aaron Brothers. The place I use is called Frame Destination.
I like using the fake suede as backing, as it keeps the pennant from moving around. No need for tape, stitching, or anything else. The pennant will touch the glass... I know that some people have concerns about that. I've had to buy this type backing elsewhere (i.e., from Aaron Brothers), but then just use it in the frame that comes in the mail. The Santa Clara pennant is 5 feet long, and the total cost to frame it was less than $300 (even with UV protection and anti-glare). It has more historical than monetary significance. Around 1915, the All Blacks rugby team traveled to the US and played a number of west coast teams (including Santa Clara). The All Blacks won the game and took the pennant. I purchased it from someone in New Zealand several years ago. I think Aaron Brothers wanted about $800 to frame the Seals pennant. I was able to do it for about $200. |

Here in NYC, its Michaels. One just opened in Manhattan and I know of one in Queens.
Personally, I like Hobby Lobby better. There isn't a Hobby Lobby close by though. Mike

Here in Houston we have Michael's and Hobby Lobby as well. Never heard of Aaron Bros. I've had my framing done at Michael's (Travel posters...not pennants). It's not exactly cheap...even with their perpetual, always on sale, framing coupon.
I've got a 5 foot map of Manhattan neighborhoods that I've been meaning to take in...if I could just stop buying pennants, I'd have the money to frame it. ![]()

As someone who knows just enough to be dangerous about framing, I will tell you that once you get above a certain size, it pretty much doubles the price. Standard is up to a certain size (glass, etc), but above that is where it gets expensive.

Islesnut - welcome! I just scored a near complete 1970s WHA set on Saturday! Being from Minnesota originally, I have a special appreciation for hockey pennants! We can commiserate!
Rob, below is my before and after bleach experiment on my Royals pennant...it seemed to get some stains out, but it also took some color from the lettering out and seemed to 'yellow' it some. I think I put too much on as I really wanted the stains to come out. Likely more operator issues than anything. Also had two pickups this week. A Packers and Memphis Blues pennant. The Memphis Blues' condition is not mint, but I like it anyway! |

You know you've got the pennant bug when you start collecting softball.
![]() Don't worry...I've got it too. I've added quite a few New York City travel pennants to my collection and am branching out to other places I've been and love. That's been pretty much my experience too with that era of pennants. They improve, but not by as much as older pennants do. I think your after photos look better than the before though and that's the point. Interesting that the bleach turns the black paint in to Royal blue. Love the new pennants too.

Yeah, I agree it looks a little better. I don't love the results, but it is an improvement. The new royal blue lettering was an interesting occurance. Thanks! Showing pick-ups are always fun! Rob, your recent football pics are rediculous - very impressive! |
